LODGE FLOURISHING?SCHOOL CLOSING, ETC. Lake City, May 9:?~)r Hem- < ingway of Rome was noied here * Thursday. * t-? ttt n n_i , ttev yy 13 ddltci jjaaatu <_ through town one day last week i on his way to visit relatives at 1 Rome. j Mr Dolon Rollins of Florence \ was here Friday. ^ Col O T Hall went to Flor- J ence Tuesday. He was sub- ^ poenaed to appear as a witness a - - t> a in the case 01 cstrauss vs. rvupei. which was referred to S W G a c Shipp, Esq. j Mr T U Covington went home b to Bennettsville Saturday night, * Quite a number of his pupils ^ y' accompanied him to the train v V to bid him good-bye and we un- v derstand he carried some flow- f< ers with him. ? Mr G L Atkinson, our agent, g who was ill several weeks, is s able to be out again. v Mr George Lee came over from Scran ton Saturday. ) Our town school closed Fri- f< day. There were no ceremonies ? or exercises of any kind what- ? ever. Only a few words an- 0 nouncintr the- termination and a the collecting of books and the term of 1904-1905 was at an end. e * Taken all in all we are inclined c to think this session has been ^ the most successful in several years. Mr Covington and ? MJsses Morris, Stanley, s Thomas and Sutcliffe seem to V have done their several duties Cl fathfully and well, and so far ? as we have been able to learn ^ the progress made by the chil- a dren is gratifying. We are in receipt of an in- J vitation to the commencement ^ of the Baltimore Medical College on Thursday, the 11th instant. Mr Clarence D Rollins is one of the graduates, with ^ full degree. With four years in the college and two in the New York City hospital, Dr Rollins is no doubt well trained for a successful career in his profess- ? ion. We congratulate him and rejoice with him. * * The degree of Esquire was conferred upon a class of four y at the convention Tuesday night j of the Lake City lodge K of P. ^ THe tallowing were tne mem- ^ bers of the class: 0 T Hall, Ci B C Johnson, C H Sansbury and ^ Alva Weaver. The candidates y were good subjects and the ^ ceremony was very interesting. , This lodge is in a flo; rishing tj condition. The meetings are j, well attended and all tak * much interest in the proceedings. The # members are enthusiastic on e( the subject of their brick hall, j, which they are working up. Several hundred dollars have ^ already been raised towards this object. Mr W F L Steele came down 0 from Rockingham, N. C., Fri- tl day morning. For the first time in more T Vinn ? ww?lr th<? h#?rrv ahinm>ra I! had enough refrigerators Mon- j day. Th^re were five, but had the weather not been sc very wet, several more would have been needed. Friday * night [< there were two car-loads left over after filling all refrigerators. The company loaded n these into box cars and. sent C1 them off. The shippers received is a telegram Monday announcing a , that they arrived in such con- V( ^ "dition that consignees refused to receive them. Nothing will w answer for shipments to distant ff' a markets except refrigerators, d ^ Express shipments fare but little better than box-cars. Last t] week when the cold storage b * cars were so short, several tried Repressing to near-by cities, j Richmond, Baltimore, Augusta, n etc., but in numerous cases berries reached their destination behind time?transfers were not ^ made at proper places, track b . was not kept, etc. Some went ' so slowly that they rotted on %the way, and we understand t that many crates were dumped n in rivers, and others that ti reached the point of consignment were condemned by health officers and sale forbidden. The berries that get into refrigerators go through all right and bring good prices. Our growers ire now going ahead as rapidly is the weather permits, picking md delivering to the agent, takng his receipt, and notifying :onsignees of date of shipment ind consignees are making note >f the market on date they should arrive and keeping check >f sales. Thus matters are beng shaped for damage claims irViioVi TOlll Ka nnf in rv iiivii ?? 111 w |7Ub iu? It is said that the Armour people will settle all just claims Without suit. If they do, it vill prove a blessing in two vays: our growers will receive heir dues and the company rill reap its sure reward. Such i step will win the confidence nd respect of all our people ,nd will result in such an inrease of business that the company will soon be doubly reim>ursed for all it#will lose by he unfortunate state of affairs hat produced this car famine. Ve have heard no inkling of rhat the Express company rill do and we withhold opinion or the present. One thing eems pretty certain, satisiacion must be tendered our Towers, who are the innocent ufferers, or they will know rhy. The weather condition is beoming serious. Cotton and to acco are the chief sufferers so ir. Young cotton cannot be rorked at all?not even hopped out, and grass is grow?g like wild fire. Another week f rains wili surely spell disster. 1 Mr L B Roper went to Flornce Tuesday. Mr J Cleve McElveen went to harleston this morning. The local telephone system is earing completion. Poles and rires are up and the central tation is now being fitted up. ie are satisfied that most exellent results will be given. Iverything connected with the ystem is of good material and 1 rell e rected under the person- , 1 management of an expert. ] lo time, money or labor has een spared and we are sure the 1 ywn ought to be proud of such 1 system. W. L. B. Memorial Day. | A meeting of veterans of < amp Pressley was held in the i ourt house yesterday to cele- 1 rate Memorial day and pay 1 ibute to their departed com* 1 ides. Addresses were made I y Commandant H H Kinder ; nd Rev W B Justus and a reso- < ition was passed relative to le holding of future meetings on (eraorial day. While this resoition was ordered published, I e understand, yet despite our Sorts, we were unable to seure a copy, and caonot state , efinitely the provisions, Last , ear the exercises on Memorial av were interesting* and im- , ressive, and a large crowd parcipated, including a number of idies. But for some reason the idies did not take part on this ccasion and the veterans seemi to feel keenly disappointed, ust why the ladies were not resent we are unable to say, ut we feel safe in the assertion lat it was not due to any lack f respect for the veterans or leir deceased comrades. An enthusiastic meeting of Kingstree baseball team was held Monday night and an organization effected, with officers as follows: P H Stoll, manager; P W Fairey, captain, and J F Scott, secretary and treasurer. A uniform was adopted and will Ku rvrrl 4 *\nr?u ^Th*. fl n . WV Ul UC1 CU U I \Jl AW* X 1V?1U monl is being1 laid off by Surveyor Gourd in and soon the cry of "play ball!" will resound and the voice of the "rooter'' will be heard in the land. There is some excellent material in town from which to form a good team and it is expected that some tirst rate exhibitions of skill will b e given at the "park'' during the ensuing season. ANOTHER NEW ENTERPRISE. The Klngstree Dry Goods Co. Buys a Lot With the View of Building. A stock company has purchased a lot on East Main street from L Stackley with a view to erecting thereon a brick building to be occupied as a dty goods store. The style of the concern is said to be the Kingstree Dry Goods Co., which, as we are informed, comprises the following well known business men: Messrs E B Rhodus of Greelyville, J C Graham of Gourdins, T A Blakeley of Taft and E H Pringle of Charleston. Ttoere are Others. The North Dakota "Flag of Freedom" regales its readers with the subjoined pathetic plaint. There are indeed "others:" "It is reported that one of the fastidious newly married ladies 5f this town kneads bread with tier gloves on." This incident may be somewhat peculiar?but there are others:? "The editor of this paper needs bread with his shoes on; tie needs bread with his shirt an; he needs bread with his pants on, and, unless some of the delinquent subscribers of this 'Old Bag- of Feedom' pony up before long, be will need bread without a damn thing on, and North Dakota is no Garden of Eden in the winter time. Editor County Record: As I have finished my planting and crops are lip to good stands, to- : Inicco all set out, etc., while I am waiting for the grass to grow some 1 I will write you a few lines, i First of all, I wish to-suv some- j thing ahout mv visit to Florence District, conference, which con veiled , :ir. Newman Swamp church, two miles north of Lamar, Darlingtomr county, last week. Well, in coim pany itli my friend and neigh her, .1 T Faddy, we pulled the lines f over "Zeb" at Leo at 3 o'clock p. in. on Friday, the 28 inst, and our t first stop was live miles west of Tiinmonsville, at 9 p m, a distance s of 45 miles. We spent the night there with relatives, being within ^ six miles of the seat of Conference. On Saturday morning we drove ? y over to the church and found the business of the Conference well-nigh finish.-d. Ifowever, I met and * greeted there scores of my friends, botn preachers and laymen, and en- i joyed the day very much. Those fellows over in Darlington feed ? heavy. t When I was told that it had been 23 years since I had been in j, the Lamar section I was not sur- a prised at the wonderful development alon^ all lines. Aside from ^ old Williamsburg I Know of no ^ finer farming lauds anywhere than those along Sparrow Swamp. I found eiops no farther advanced v there than ours in Williamsburg. 0 (Stick a peg here. Those people aie planting cotton). 1 Well, I can't tell all that I saw li and heard; but, above all others, I noticed one thing and that was the v condition of the public roads?oh c my, such fine roads they have in Florence and Darlington counties. I held old Williamsburg up as hav- j ing as fine farming lands as any county in ihe State, but said nothing about her roads. How long? ^ oh, how long?before I can praise her roads too? Well, on Sunday morning I felt v very unwell and thought it best that S( I turn my face homeward; so at 10 o'clock I bade my relatives and ^ frieuds goodbye and again pulled the strings on "Zeb." At 12:30 p e m we found ourselves at the gate of that fine old gentleman, J C Lynch, F and hardly had we entered the par- o lor when I heard his good lady say: "Dinner is ready,Calip.'' Well, it's g no use trying to tell what we found n on that table. Suffice it to say it was just gran<L ^ After a good, long rest and chat we again pulled the lines down and ^ steered onr "ship of the plains" to- " wards Cowards?a section whose distinguishing features used to be c hog-paths, but which now can "boast 0 of good loads?until we reached the d line and were once move on our native soil. There my heart wilted p when the buggy rocked to and fro and threw mud and day on my friend's new clothes. Some day, maybe, we'll have good roads too. Respectfully yours, 11 J Davis Carter. w Leo, S C May 1, 1905. ^ Admitted to the Bar. o Mr F Will Fairey, who has t been studying law in the office o qf J no A Kelley, Esq., for some time, took his examination before the supreme court in Columbia last week and now is en- r titled to practice at the bar.
