It will da no good unless we organize a company to handle it. Orangeburg has come into the col t. umn of South Carolina towns having daily papers. Messrs Berry Co. have begun the publication of an attractive daily in the Edisto City. It will do a world of good in Orange burg, and the business people should stand by it Senator George Frisbie Hoar, of f hu paued *w?y. He died lait week at his New England borne, and with him passed the highest order of New England statesmanship. Senator Hoar was a RepubliSt E can, but came as near being a statesman as it is possible for a partisan to be. He was broader than his party, and refuse! to respond to the des * potic orders of the master of the Republicans. He has always, and consistently, foOght Rosevelt'a policy of imperialism. He was senator for many years. His constituents knew 1a useful man when they saw him, and. refused to change simply for the " sake of changing. The highest type of town pride apd spirit we have seen in many moons is that shown in the action of g the citizens of McColt, S. C., id building a twelve thousand dollar Hfc* * f < school building bj public subscripty ion. Those folks over there wanted & fine school house, and they were f not afraid it would cost them something. They did not vote a bond & issue, but went down in their purses I and built it. There were a number of $1000 subscriptions. McColl is * one of the rery best towns in the ?>tate, and it has been this liberal spirit and united action that hare made it such. Can't we of Kings, tree learn something from McColl. k Up. ,ia Spartanburg, the centre of ft! cotton manufacturing interests, they I are talking of a scheme by which the B mill people will control the ginning of all.ootfcon. The mills propose to ' get control or all the gins, and hope thereby to get the first chance at the ?*too. We do not know exactly . what this action signifies, but we do ft know that this hogging business has gone far enough. The people are K heartily tired of a few men control illD# everything. South Caro> liai has welcomed the coming of cot1 ton rniHs, but when they essay to run eruy thing they are going further th 11 the people will submit to. Dtwn with this proposed trust!! Theodore Roosevelt's books are i gmng him n0 (;Qri 0f trouble. Before he became so prominent as a i statesman he was free with his pen, J id wrote a while library of books, i f . He wrote a book on almost every conceivable subject. His subjects ranged from bear hunting to the lives of great public men. And now he is sorrv that he wrote so much. The people have been reading those books lately, an-i find many things that are good campaign i a .-rial. In some of the books he says hard things about some of the men who are promineut in his party, and in other books be says outrageous things about the Southern people. The great cpiestion now is to explain and deuy. He has designated a special secretaiy to attend to this matter. That very versatile gentleman, K r Leob, erstwhile private secretary to his majesty, has been commissioned to look after this particular matter. wi *1 n TT _ 1 l_? i YTime ivir nay is looKiog aiter matters of foreign diplomacy, aud Mr Moody after matters of international law, Mr Leob is very busy looking after'tbe president's books, and|denying the sayings thereof. He is the busiest man in the whole administration. It is not settled what, his office will be called, but we suggest that it be christened "secretary of lies." The State house matter in Columbia refuses to be settled. The two commissions are still sparring. They have besn employing experts for months, and reports without number have been submitted. One commission's expert says the house is 0. K., and then the expert of the other , crowd comes along and declares that the dome is about to fail. The people are beginning to have "that tired feeling." To put it a little stronger, they are beginning to be very much disgusted. It looks to men up trees as if the whole thing is born of a spirit of rivalry between the commissions. One party orign&lly wanted a certain architect to draw the plans. He was voted down by a clear majority, and auother architect chosen. The house was built, but that party refused to be reconciled. lie wanted his man, and it looks as thongh he will be satisfied with no other architect. The governor employed a government expert, a man of undoubted ability, and be reported that the bouse is in no danger whatever. This does not satisfy the original commissson, and they propose to get other eiperis to look into the matter. It appeals to us that this matter can best be settled by the resignation of the whole bunch. The people are disgusted with this matter, and want men who are above small.rivalry and jealously. Give us a rest on the subject Lynchings are hardly matters of news in South Carolina. They are so common. But the latest one is perhaps worthy of some Notice. The latest one is something different from the others. This time the victim is a white man. One John Morrison, of Kershaw, Lancaster county, was lynched Saturday night last for the murder of Mr. Win. Floyd, of the same town. Mr. Floyd was a most estimable young gentleman, and and was shot by Morrison because he was guilty of the outrageous crime of refusing to give Morrison ten cents! The marder was most revolt* ing. Morrison shot Floyd fatalJy, and when he was down in the agonies { of death shot him again. The mar- ^ uerer was ttrreu/eu, ?uu uuuuueu in the town jail. Late in the night a mob took him out, and banged him to a tree in the outskirts of Kershaw. We cannot endorse the action of the mob, but can uot refrain from 11 .2 saving that the }.ovocatio*r was very great Mr. Floyd was one of the best men in Kershaw, and that * he should be thus foully murdered was nothing short of outrageous.
