SOUTH CAROLINA COLLEGE, Scholarships for Men Teachers. *vEig.'Jty-tvn> slnbar.ships fur met: te:icher>! That :s mie of the fruits of the educational statemanship of the last Legislatuie. This Legislature at its tivst .Session ill 1SK)? established in the South Carolina College forty-one normal scholarships, ami at its next, session douMed the number of these scholarships, making two from each eotioty. This was to provide ;t new class, but as not all the ho.(lovers wiii ( return, tiiere will doubtless lie as many as sixtv new selu lurships1 awarded this summer, one in every! county and two to a county in many j instance*. Any person interested: should writ" to President Poll jam in j Sloan, or Prof Paterson Ward law, iCo:- ! umhi.i, S. C. Eat !i of tbese scholarships pays $40; in mi ney toward living expenses, and \ exemnts the holder from a fee of $18, ! whiei: i< exacted of all other students, J and also exempts from the tuition iVoj of $-10. which, however, is remitted t<>; any student w ho makes proof of inability to pay it. It admits a man en-! tirely free and pays about half of his board. This muni licence of the State j is designed primarily to provide better j teachers for the country schools, but j incidentally it aids poor but woithy young men to obtain a college educa-j liou and tit themselves for higher! vthings in life. In order that thej scholarships shall go to this elass of j young men and 110c be gobbled up by : young fellows who could get to college j without the scholarships, the awards ! are not made solely w ith r? fort-nee to I the ui trks made on the examination, j and men nineteen years of age and) over are given the preference. This) gives an opportunity lo the country, young man, whose technical preparation way be far le>* than that of the tifteei -year-old graduate of a town graded school, but whose maturity and earnestness are a guaranty that when ! given .in opportunity t<> stuav m eoi- i < lege he will pul! through :ind make a 1, man of himself. Preference is still I lurther given to young men who have | taught school. It is often the case j that a young man in the country, al- { though with poor preparation, attempts to teach the neighborhood achooi. For his own sake and tor the , sake of the schools he ought to he given a i>etter education before he becomes settled in a life of inferior work. ' Hen^e i lie special effort of the author- i 1 itiesof the South Carolina College isj? to iuduce young men teachers who are j j ill prepared for their work* to stop now ai d go to college while th -y can. The scholarship men )a<t year were of! the average age of 22 1-8 years, and the 1! oldest was 3C It is hoped that such i young men, having already developed , some taste for teaching, and going to j college with a definite purpose, will adhere to teaching as their profession. ( If the beneficiaries of these scholar-1 '* ships were differently selected, a lar- 11 per proportion of them would do as ! f college men so often do, turn their i j backs on the country forever and be- i came professional men in towns and j J wnere uiey nave previ- ; i owmdy committed themselves to pr*I>- J i lie school work, and then stop ami go j i to college with the ideal of fitting L themselves for better work in that! line, there is strong probability that ^ for tlu most part they will return to t country schoolteachi ng? a result i which will richly repav the State for I its lib- ral policy in providing for their < .training as teachers. The course of study is specially de-j signed to improve the public schools, r Last year it included, besides the ! usual ->uhjects, special instruction in \ \ pedagogies, physics, nature study, and j, drawing, and the coarse for next year j, has be.*n enlarged and improved and ,' will include sight singing. The studer.ts had the benefit of obs< rvation 1 and practice under a critic teacher, j ana next session will practice teaching , in the Columbia public schools, having i the benefit of the su pervision and ' criticisms of Columbia's best teachers, il Typhoid Fever. Mr Logan was born about the year 1832. At an earlv age he lost his parents and was brought up un tier the c:-re of his grandfather, who> gave him private instruction and a j common school and academic educa- i tton, after which ho learned the! printing business and has been en-j gaged in journalism the greater part; of his life. In 1856 he moved to Williamsburg j county and became interested in the establishment of the first newspaper ever published in that county. He soon after bought the paper and conducted it with signal success until! 1861, when it was temporally sus- j pended in consequence of the war. j In 1859 he was elected bv the legis- { * . . . luture commissioner m equity, an of-} fice of much importance and respou- j sibility. In I860 he was-elected a, delegate to the Secession convention, ; ? ! and was the youngest member of i I that distinguished and memorable j body. In recognition of his youth I lie was appointed by its president j cashier of the convention. The death j uf Mr Logan leaves but threesurviv- I jrs of the Secession convention: Mr! He has been prominent and active n the affairs of his country, but has lever compromised or temporized with any party or movement that did ! lot have the sanction and conviction >f his judgment. He has never been 1 in office-seeker, but lias invariably j <. lecliued the use of his name for of- js ice of honor or trust, believing that { lie positiou of an editor was mcoui-!! latible with that of a professional t )olitician. He lias been industrious J uid energetic in the'activities of life, loiug much for others who were v iependent ujkui him. Among other ji worthy deeds that might he men- '' :ioned was the education and equipnent of a younger brother for the 1 jar, who was a district judge of this i State in 1867, and who became a dis- } iuguished lawyer and politician of he iState ot Tenneesee. In 1885 he established the Wil- J iamsbnrg County Record, which he sold in 1895, since which time he : } las divorced himself from journal- ( stic wo\k. His long connection ' with the press of the State, and es- 1 peciallv with The News and Courier, . whose business caused him to visit j ivery town and hamlet in the State, j ?ave him a very large and pleasant j' oersonal acauaiutanee. He was , ' ! married in 1S59 to Miss S T Scott of Williamsburg county, and has four living children, two daughters and two sons, the youngest of whom is Mr G P Logan, a practicing attorney of Columbia.
