S.O. a . . _ | THURSDAY SEPT. 15, 1904. R, Columbus Logan. In the death of Mr R C Logan Williamsburg county and South Carolina have lost a valued citizen i*i . * ?one who loved well his adopted ; county, aud in whom burned bright i to the las: the fires of patriotism and | loyalty to the traditions of his native State. It may well be said that Kingstree suffers the loss of a inan who was throughout his whole life devoted to her interests. There are now but I few left whese. lives have been so identified with the history of our town Removing here in earlv man hood he was a pioneer of journalism and one of the charter members of the Stat: Press Association. Du1 ring the many years covering the period of his active newspaper work it is imp< ssible to estimate the infln ence of bis pen in shaping the destiny of oar town and county. To The Record his death comes with peculiar sadness, for it is to him that this newspaper owes its existence, j,nd, however short our efforts have fallen, it has ever beeD the aim of the present management to maintain the high standard of editorial excellence set for us by J our original predecessor. His life is ended and soon his mortal remains will be mingled with the dost of the earth, but as long as ' The County Record continues to! <xist?it matters not whose may be j the guiding hand at the helm?this I newspaper will be a perpetual memorial to its distinguished founder, R. Columbus Logan. , As to Cards of Thanks. Cards are going in to the county newspapers from the candidates thanking the people both ways, for electing and leaving them out. This card of thanks fad,"which has been making such a formidable run on the public for some time, would appear better if all the candidates and all the sink IV AT11/1 nyrra?ii'/A IV I ~.w? f* vuiu \'i^aui6(/ a j card of thanks association and issue j proclamations annually, semi-annual j ly or quarterly, as suits the emer- j gency of the cases in hand. It is: true that when in an election a man has received the enthusiastic support'of a majority he feels it his duty to j show his appreciation in some way 1 and there is no easier way to do tins than through the newspapers. But j this recent idea which has sprung up i all over the eountry of thanking peo- J pie in this way for attention shown I the sick and those upou whom affliction has otherwise, fallen is a misconception of proprieties which should obtain in a christian community. A / little while ago a patieDt went into the newspapers to thank his physician for the visits made to his bed" V . ' ' * ,. ' '. - - 4 ' " side, when the visits were made at so many dollars apiece. Tli:s fad originated with the ''smart set" who hunt for something new regardless of the litness of things, and then other people fell into line without pausing to reflect upon the inconsenance of it and the insincerity of the idle brain which lirst prompted it. In the early days, before Christianity had become a ruling principle among men, there was a good Samaritan whose duty to liis fellow man was done because it was duty, which hud no incentive bat tbat wnicii should move all humanity. Thanks for seeing that your neighbor does not die from neglect. If yon were to fail in the performance of a simple christian duty and by such failure dire misfortune to yonr neighbor should follow, do vou think ? 7 * I yon would have deserved a card of thanks if you had stepped aside from I your iudifferent and inhuman course and averted the calamity? No, duty needs no thanks; deserves none.? Greenwood, ?S. News and Views.
