The smokehouse shown in t lie illustration, while a homely affair, gives good service and will co>t but little to build. A dry goods box or a piano box will answer the purpose nicely. An important aud unsettled question Is how long a cow should be milked. Though there are no experiments thai can be used for guides. Professor llecker .says the record of the dairy herd at the Minnesota Experiment Station gives ;?o:ne information on the subject. It has btcn found invariably that the cows do better when given a resi of from six to ten weeks, than when milked up till a week or two before -calving. Some cases would Indicate, however, that cows arc much more subject to lever after a long rest than a>. short cue. The ends of the shovel blade extend backward at an angle to the body of the blade, so as to shovel the soil laterally among the plants in the drill and cover up any little vegetation i that the blade cannot reach without I cutting the plants. Another type of ! blade also is provided, which will lie found useful for certain conditions. This blade, as shown in the engraving, is rounded at the lower corner of each end. so as to prevent injury to the ! plants. These blades are sufficient for ordinary surface work, but when deeper cultivation is required, cultivator teeth may lie attached to the shovel blades, | as shown in the sectional views. These teeth are of various sizes ar.d shapes to suit different requirements. Some ot the biades employed may be turned backward, others downward, and others again may lie made with turned ends. The object of turning the teeth backward is to shovel the dirt in the drills among the plants. The implement is very effective and of a simple construction. It is also very light, and by its use plants may be readily kept under required cutivatiou.?Scientific American. '-rr The Apple Orchard* Xo particular kind of soil is indispensably necessary for the success of an apple orchard. But a good, eveudraincd soil is indispensable. Low. Hat laud, holding stagnant water below the surface, is not suitable for tree growth, as it tends to the production of soft wood, and the fruit will be lacking in color and form. But Holds nearly level, if somewhat elevated, and possessing natural or artificial drainage. may be excellent for orchards. Sandy soils are not best adapted to the apple, as they seldom possess or long retain the fertility that is essential. It is a good plan to f>st a soil intended for an apple orchard with some annual crop, say corn or potatoes. A good yield will indicate that the ground is . lit for the trees, while an inferior crop j will show that it should be kept under j cultivation and well fertilized until it j is bnuiffht into good condition. Whether the previous treatment of the soil, in the spring, before planting, the orchard ground should receive a liberal application of barnyard manure, or other fertilizer, followed by careful plowing and thorough harrowing. The | best fruit growers consider it absolui tely necessary to till the orchard ground lor tiie first three or four I years, to produce a thrifty growth of [ the trees. Without it. the young trees will become more or less stunted, and f the time of fruiting will be delayed. Louring the tfrst six or eight years certain crops may be secured for the labor expended, but the crop selected should always be one that will require or admit of cultivation. Hay or grain crops are out of place in an orchard. If the annual plowing and cultivation of the land has been properly practiced in the young orchard, it is I :.n easy matter to continue the custom after the trees begin to bear fruit. Such tillage has n great advantage over the ordinary sod treatment. Tillage should come in July, to Insure the ripening of the newly-fouiul wood and buds. At tills time some cover crop, such as crimson clover, red clover, cow peas, or even rye, may be sown. Such fall growth will add plant food and improve the general condition of the toil when plowed down the succeeding spring. The best trees to buy are those which are two years old from the bud, of medium size, not stunted, with straight, stiff trunks, abundant fibrous roots, and free from insects. When trees are taken from the nursery row. the root system is reduced often oue-half. or even more. When the young tree Is set out the top should be pruned to make a corresponding reduction, otherwise moisture will be evaporated from an extensive leaf surface more rapidly than it can be supplied by the reduced root system, and in a dry time the tree will die or suffer greatly. A distance of forty feet apart is not any too much for such varieties as Baldwin. Belltlower and Rhode Island Greening. Varieties like Northern <6py, Ben Davis and York Imperial, with less spreading heads, may be planted thirty feet apart, or better, thirty-five feet. Pruning of bearing apple trees requires judgment. Thompson, of Green County, bought of a young man named Skaggs, of the same vicinity. the hide of a silver-gray fox, for which he paid eighty-live cents. Neither of the men had any real idea of the value of such furs until it was put on the market in Louisville, where It brought the nice sum of $35, and had it not been crossed with other species of the fox tribe it would have brought well up in the hundred dollars. The hides of the thoroughbreds sell at from ?50 to $325. The silver fox is not a native of this country, but they arc plentiful In some parts of the old country.?Ilcdgcnville (Ky.) Herald. Now, thy climate is net to Maine for this, and if apples once prow well with you is it not worth while to study the cause of their failure now? i Men realize that for the growing of | their annua! crops they must cultivate ] well and keep up liie fertility of the soil. They do not try to grow coin j and wheat at the same time on the same held, for they know that it cannot he (lone successfully, but when it comes to the orchard they assume that a tree can not only take care of itself like the trees in the forest, hut that they can crop the iand for other things at the same time and still get crops of apples. Herein lies the greatest of all the troubles i:i apple growing. So long as the sol! was a virgin soil anil abounding in plant food the trees throve in spite of neglect, but as they gradually robbed the soil assisted by the crops planted among them there was soon a failure, for trees as well as other crops need plenty of available plant food in the soil. Another thing that apple trees especially need is an abundance of soil moisture. It is useless to apply fertilizers to any plant if there is not moisture enough in the soil to dissolve them. Hence the importance for providing a soil abounding in vegetable decay to retain the moisture needed for the solution of the piant food applied. Few growers fully realize the amount of the various forms of plant food that an apple orchard takes,from the soil. At the recent American Apple Growers' ' Congress in St. Louis Professor Clothier gave some very striking figures In this regard which were taken from the experiments made at the Agricultural Experiment Station of Cornell University. He showed lhat with an average yield (and this is a small one in a good orchard) of 200 bushels per acre, that this 200 bushels of fruit would remove from the soil thirteen f pounds of nitrogen. only one pound of i phosphoric acid and nineteen pounds of potash, and the apples alone would t remove from each aero S2.43 worth of plant l'ood. Then the growth of the wood and the leaves of the trre must v "l>e taken into account, and it takes a * very eonsiderabl amount of food to c keep up the activity of a large tree, a Altogether there was i:i the orchard a * demand for plant food to a total value of $9.01 per acre. He compared this with a crop of corn g making fifty bushels per acre, and fi showed that the corn removed little j more than the fruit trees, "ml yet every e farmer knows that he cannot expect c fifty bushels of corn per aero unless he t keeps tin the fertility of the soil, nr.d ( yet we see the same men trying to get ? apples from a soil that has been drained * by th? tries in this way for a generation. and not only drained by ilie trees, but called upon to grow a bay crop or . to pasture stock. Is it any wonder that , we cannot grow apples as well as we < once did? 1 The statement we have given shows ( that the demand for phosphoric acid is ( very small as compared with that for *A nitrogen and potash, and the trees will * demand more potash than a crop of corn of fifty bushels per acre, and do- < raand it every year, for there can be no rotation of crops here. The week ending 8 a. m., Monday, April 20th. had an average temperature of 57 degrees, which is about 8 degrees below normal. The temperatures were low enough for light frosts on the Loth, 16th, 17th and 18th, and some !rost was noted on each of these days, aut on the I8t.h only was it general. These frcsts did no perceptible injury, ;xcept to check germination, and jrowth of crops that are up. The rains etarded farmwork in the west until tear the close of the week, so that leither plowing nor planting made nuch progress, but in the eastern and :entral divisions, both progressed rapdly. Some hail was noted on the 14th, ind snow flurries on the 15th in the exxeme west. Plowing and farmwork in general are nore backward in the western division han usual. A small portion only of the ipland corn crop has been planted, and lone on bottom lands, and cotton danting has only begun. The weather :onditions were more favorable in "the :ast, where upland corn, cotton and ice planting are almost finished, ex:ept the low-lands in the Georgetown listrict devoted to rice that continue oo wet to work. More than half the ohaceo acreage has been transplanted, ind the set plant3 are doing well, alrmst all nf them beine alive, the veather having been suited to this rork. Much corn has oome up to from poor o fair stands, and some has been cultivated but stands were thinned by birds tnd worms in places, necessitating eplanting.' The cool weather caused oung corn, cotton and rice to look ickly and yellow. There is, however, >ut little cotton up. Oats improved in a few sections. aJhough generally they deteriorated beng still infested with lice, and the cold vcather is said also to be injurious. *ust is prevalent on both wheat and ats. Oats are heading in many places, md in Charleston county will soon be ipe. Wheat is heading also, but is unuomising owing to rust and insects. The fruit prospects are good in most ections. although uncertain in others, iltbough the frosts did no injury to ;eaches. Gardens are improving.
