Court in the ease of John Brownfield vs the State of South Carolina. This decision removes the . last vestige of hope for the Georgetown rtegro barter, who several years a^o shot and killed constable Scurry when the latter attempted to serve a warrant of arrest u}>on him. The affair came near precipitating a rac# riot at the time and State troops were sent to Georgetown to aid in keeping down a threatened negro uprising. ^ Later on Browntield was tried in the circuit court of' sessions and fonnd gnilty acd sentenced to hang. His counsel appealed to the State Supreme Court, which affirmed the the finding of the circuit court, when an appeal was taken to the United States Supreme Court, where it was argued recently by by Solicitor John S Wilson and assistant Attorney General Townsend.
