BROWNFlELD WILL HANG.
The Last Vestige of Hope for Scurry's
Murderer. RemovJd.
The United States Supreme Court
has snstuilccl the State Supreme!
Court in the ease of John Brownfield
vs the State of South Carolina.
This decision removes the . last
vestige of hope for the Georgetown
rtegro barter, who several years a^o
shot and killed constable Scurry
when the latter attempted to serve a
warrant of arrest u}>on him. The
affair came near precipitating a rac#
riot at the time and State troops
were sent to Georgetown to aid in
keeping down a threatened negro
uprising. ^
Later on Browntield was tried in
the circuit court of' sessions and
fonnd gnilty acd sentenced to hang.
His counsel appealed to the State
Supreme Court, which affirmed the
the finding of the circuit court,
when an appeal was taken to the
United States Supreme Court, where
it was argued recently by by Solicitor
John S Wilson and assistant Attorney
General Townsend.

Saved the School House.
Miss Junie M Shaw, who has
charge of the Shaw school near
town, recently narrowly escaped losing
her school house by tire and
only by her presence of mind and
prompt action was the danger averted.
During school hours the roof
of the building caught fire from a
spark from the stove causing considerable
excitement and alarm
among the school children. But
the young teacher was quite master
or rather mistress of the situation.
The:school pail was full of water
and the loof low off the ground; go,
without a moment's delay, she
seized the bucket and dashed the
contents on the roof, thereby completely
extinguishing the incipient
blaze and thus saving her school
building. X.
