The buildings are partly on the ri^ht of wav on which the proposed street will run. North of these buildings are two negro houses which will have to go, if the street be opened up. We are informed further that instructions for the removal of the pack house just north of the cattle pen have beeu issued. The privilege taxes are being commented upon. We have not seen the schedule, but some of the charges made are bound to create dissatisfaction unless all businesses and professions be taxed somewhat in proportions to capital invested and money earned. For instance we understand that merchants, taxes remain unchanged while druggists are charged $10,00; lawyers $5,00 and livery, sale and feed stables $25,00. Gourdin, Sr. Died, January 19th, 1903, Mr' 1 K Gourdin, Sr., in Pineville, at the residence of his nephew, Mr I K Gourdin, Jr. lie was born May 10, 1834; was a graduate of Harvard University, spent seven years in travel and study of his profession, of civil engineering, in Europe. Ruturned to South Carolina when she seceded, was ' distinguished for gallantry during the war, being promoted to be a lieutenant. After the war he en- , gaged iu his profession at Charleston for several years.
