' i W..K- -I - A Question of Good Roads, The following article from the Gaffney Ledger is very well expressed and certainly applies to Williams. burg county as forcibly as to Cherokee: Farmers of Cherokee county, how do you like our public roads just now? Would it not be better to issue $200,000 worth of public road 1 - * J -i ?,?1 uouus aim uuiiu unc muiuicu <um fifty miles of macadam roads than to wear out buggies and wagons, harness and gears and lose so much time on, these bad roads? Let U6 see about this road business. Two ~ hundred thousand dollars worth of 5 per cent bonds would mean a tax of $10,000 a year for interest. It would be necessary to create" a fund to retire these bonds at maturity. We are now spending about $8,000 a year on our roads. If we were to Jay aside $10,000 a year to retire these bonds and raise $10,000 to pay the interest on the same, that would mean $20,00 a year. Deduct $8,000 that we are already spending and we would be required to raise 9. 000 a rear to meet this obli?a tion. The taxable property of the county amounts to $3,604,192.21. A tax of 3i mills on this means that we would have the finest of macadam roads running from one extreme of the county to the other and crossing the county at least four or five times if not more. If the roads were built eight feet of maca dam and eightfeet of dirt road and a law passed compelling travelers to use the dirt road in dry weather and the macadam road in wet weather, even more miles of road could' be built.
