Mr L F Baxley, of Lambert, sent us a stalk of ribbon cane from his farm last Monday, also a sample of [lis corn- The specimen of cane is rft 8in long with joints well matured clear to the top. This is the finest stalk that has come our way yet. The grains of corn submitted, are the largest we have ever seen, but we are not informed of the variety or the average yield. Mr. Baxley promised to let us know later on the number of gallons of I ) I I ' syrup obtained per acre from his cane. Also if he has a good chance we venture to say he will send us a sample of the aforesaid syrup. Judging from the specimens brought to this office recently our farmers certainly have boon "raising | cane" this year. We received j samples last week from the fields of j Messrs T J Phillips and Hugh Tisdale. both of whom live in the Cedar Swamp section. Mr Phillips' j stalk measures feet iti length, and 1 . . . 1 this he says is an average specimen , from from the half acre he planted. ! | Mr Tisdale borught us two stalks, i . , . the longest of which is ?J feet long j and the other a few inches shorter. | The ribbon cane nukes delightful ; syrup and we are glad to see that our farmers are so successfully cultivating it. It is reported that the jurors stood 11 for conviction for manslaughter and the twelfth held out for a verdict of murder. As we go to press the case of the State vs L C Myers is before the court but the attorneys for the defense have moved to quash the indictment on technical grounds.
