Morris, of Greens, an ! old friend of The Record, gave us a tangible token of his appreciation of the paper while in town Tuesday. Such friends are the | kind that count. At a meeting of the town council Monday the following were elected to constitute the bnard of health; Dr. W.G. Gamble, chairman, Drs. D. 0. Scott, W. L. Wallace, and Messrs. W. R. Funk and Geo. S. Barr. About 9 o'clock Friday night the | packing house of Mr. S. F. Epps, j near Spring Bank,, was destroyed | by fire. Mr. Epps lost 1000 lbs, of I fiwtrlur ft of <rn;inO and all his ' plows and plowing gear. The fire ' is supposed to have been the work of an incendiary. Dr. William Edwin Hall, of New York, will lecture in the court house this evening at 8:30 o'clock. His subject will be a medley of his ; two famous lectures, "Home Sweet i Home" and "Roasted Husbands on | Toast". A percentage of of the proceeds will given to the Kingsj tree base ball team. McElveen, of Spring j Bank, brought to this office last ' i Saturday a copy of the "South Carolina Planter." an 8 page, 3 column , weekly newspaper, published in j Columbia, S. C., and bearing date of 1840. Among the news items was an account of a jockey club meet, in which wejre entered two ; hordes belonging to Col. Wade Hampton. Friday afternoon a team or horses from Thomas & Bradham's livery ' stable ran away with a wagon and tore it up; spilling the colored ? driver, but lortunately not hurting . him. The wagon, loaded with lura> ber. was returning from Brunson's ? mill, when some hoards projecting in front touched the horses and , caused the runaway. When the ( horses reached town the wagon i tongue was about all that remained ; hitched to them. Maria McFadden, a dusky denizen of Brown's Corner, was up bei fore the mayor's court muesday for overindulgence in "Iwn.ze" and at tempting to give an open air matinee on Bail road avenue. Her performance was interrupted by Marshal Anderson, who marched , j'Maria off to jail. After duly conj sidering the case and the attending circumstances Mayor iveiiev imposed a line of $2.00, which Maria cheerfully paid and went her way rejoicing. The Coleman Hotel made a narrow escape last Tuesday. About midday a spark from the kitchen stove ignited the roof of the kitchen and had burst into a blaze before it was discovered. When the alarm whs given a few buckets of water hastily thrown on the fire extinguished it before any damage was done beyond the burning of a few boards on the roof. Had the discovery been delayed a few minutes later the whole building and perhaps others would have been destroyed. . Mrs. W. J. Reddick is on a visit to her old home at Elloree. Mr. Stewart Cunningham, of Indiantown, is in town to day. Rev. H. J. Can then has been visiiting the exposition a few days this week. It has been announced positively that the exposition will close the I last of May. Mrs. E. A. Ransom, of Brooklyn, who is visiting her home folk near town, attended the exposition several days this week. Capt. G. P. Nelson went down to Charleston Tuesday to see his son, Frank, whose condition, is much improved. As soon as he is able to travel Capt. Nelson will bring him to Kinpstree to remain until lie regains his strength. j Next Thursday, May 22, is Wagener Day at the exposition. This will be one of the best days, thcusatul of souvenir tickets having already been sold. As a special inducement the railroad fare has been reduced even below the dollar rate from this point and round trip i tickets good for three days will be 1 sold for 90 cents on Wednesday, May 21. The railroad agent wishes it distinctly undeistood that the 90c tickets will not he sold on the 22nd. Mr. Dove also has on sale souvenir I tickets to the exposition grounds. The entertainment A/as given for the benefit of Kingstree baseball team and shouid have been more liberally patronized.
