Rela* tive to Magistrates. To the Hon. James Aldrich, Judge presiding at December term 1901, for the county ot Williamsburg in said State: . The grand Jury herewith begs to file their general presentment, end begs to incorporate in same the report as filed by the special committee of the grand jury, and also the report of the supervisor covering the offices of the various magistrates ef the county. All the bills of indictment handed us by the solicitor have been acted on and we herewith return to your honor'as well as to the solicitor our thanks for the lucid manner in which our various duties re re explained and the kindness extended. We congratulate the caunty upon the great improvements as made in the repairs, additions and alterations ot the court house and offices, and trust the good work will keep apace with the present progress of the county. The con- j tractor, \Y. R. Funk, deserves the the commendation of the citizens of the county tor the good archi,* lecture and excellent work that he has done: and we recommend as a further improvement that a neat and substantial fence be erected around the court house 25 feet from court house on all sides thereof, giving a goed park to the tewn and the keeping out ol horses and cattle from the square. We also recommend that parties who are now using part of the public square for their own private purposes be made to par a mere nominal sum as rent so that no question can arise as against the county's title. The grand jury has inspected the jail and find the same welii kept and no complaint made b.v prisoners as to blankets ami food; but we recommend tl^at necessary heaters be furnished lor the comfort ol the prisoners. Our attention having been called hat part of the court house square has been used heretofore as a trading mart and a place of storage for the displaying of goods, wares and merchandise, we recommend that the same be prohibited aud the supervisor take the necessary $tep? to 3hale the puisance. James Aldrich, presiding judge at the December term of court for Williamsburg county. 1 The special committee or tne *rand' jury beg leave to file this their eport. Together with expert appointed by the court have examined the following offices: First: The probate court, we find :he books all written up and neatly kept. His cash book shows the sum >f eleven hundred and eighty-nine hilars and ninety cents belonging to several estates, and he has produced a certificate from Enterprise Bank of Charleston, S. C., showing that the amount is there on deposit. Ihe judge of probate reports that be finds the revised statutes of South Carolina, a book useful in the discharge of his duty, has not been turned over to him bv his predeces sor, and we [therefore recommend that ex-Judge of Probate Smith be required forthwith to restore the same to 6aid office. Second: In the clerk of court's office the following books were examined: Indexes, both cross and direct, to martgages to real estate, to chattel mortgages,lieu book and conveyances and alse other books required by law bo be kept by him, and found same written up in a neat and orderly manner. His cash book shows on hand the' sum of $252.70 belonging to several estates, which fund is on deposit and he produced a certificate from a reliable bank in* Charlesten showing the same. Third Wa parpfrillv looked into the various books of the sheriff 's office and with the exception of the tax execution book, the rest were kept as by law required . Fourth: In the school commissioner's office, owing" to the multiplicity of business just at this time of this time of the year, the school commissioner reported to us that he was somewhat behind with his entries, but at the present writing af the report all of his business transaction have been entered and the books brought up to date. Fifth: We examined the books, accounts and vouchers of the supervisors'office and found same correct and said office kept iu a neat and orderly condition. Sixth" Some time and careful attention was given the treasurer's office; this officer handling the funds of the county and being the collecting and distributing medium of the county officers, and after investigation, we find everything in good order; collections as shown by his books properly entered and accountfor, and all moneys paid out properly vouched. Owing to the ill health ot the auditor, when the special committee met, and even at this term of the court, we have not been able to have access to his office. He will leave in the near future to finish his course of study at the Baptist Theological Seminary, Loaisrille, Ky. Messrs Sam Cooper and Willie Steele attended serrices at the Baptist church here last Sunday. The writer was pleased to meet his old friend, Mr. James F. Chandler, of Black Mingo, last Sunday, but regretted to learn of his poor state of health. His many friends in this community? his old home?hope to hear soon of his restoration to health. W. S. G. On the first reading of the license bill it was, on motion of Warden Heller, ordered that the Druggist license be fixed at $5.00. An ordinance to raise supplies for the year 1902 received its first reading. An ordinance to provide for license for the year 1902, received its first read ing. * The clerk and treasurer made his reporfof moneys collected and dosbursed during the month of October on approval of the Intendant.
