I SOUTHERN INDUSTRIAL7 Ne>% Er.t uprises That Are Enriching Our Favo-ed Section. ? __ Big Contract For Richmond. Among the contracts closed last week for oil-tank steamers by the Standard Oil Co. was one awarded to the William R. Trigg Shipbuilding Co. of Richmond. Va.. for a vessels to cost $429,500. This is to have a total ilicnln^PTTtent of 9000 tons, will be 370 feet over all, 50 feet beam, -'S 1-3 feet depth, and an oil capacity of 1,500,000 gallons. The vessel is to he launched within one year from the time the keel is laid. Vice-President Myers of the Trigg Shipbuilding t'ocip panv. in an interview in the Rich-f mond Times, is quoted as follows: "This vessel will be larger than the cruiser Galveston which is now in course of construction in our yards, and will be by far the largest craft of the kind wo have ever attempted. It will not be necessary for us to increase our working force for the construction of this vessel, as we now have about 1.400 men at work, and are constantly adding to this force." For the construction of this vessel many tons of steel and special material will bo needed, and this has already been ordered. West Virginia Mining. James W. Paul, chief mine inspector of West Virginia, has published in one volume the reports for the fiscal years ending June. 30 in 1890. 1899 and 1900 of the coal mines in the State. The volume will be found valuable to many interests. The three reports being brought together in this way enables one to note the progress which has been made in coal-mining in West Virginia even in three years. ^ Between 1898 and 4900 the number dlfcons of cc-al of 2240 pounds each from all the mines increased from 14.294.8H3 to 18.8SS.911. tho unmber of tons of eolie of 2000 pounds each from 1,742.236 to 2.496107, the value of coal and coke from $11,413,034.84 to $lS.418.49o.T4. and the number of employes from 23,262 to 28,017. To Make Window fllass. The Chattanooga Glass & Bottle Man ufacturing Co.. capitalized at $50,000. contemplates building a plant for producing dally several tons of window and plate glass. The factory juet completed ha., a daily capacity of iwelve tons of glass, or 4S,0n0 pint glass bottles every twenty-four hours. The plant is now running day and night, however, a small force only being employed, to be increased to about 110 men as soon as new operatives can be trained for the work. 0 Industrial Notes. i During the first ten months of the * year 1,234,596 tons of pig-iron and 139.391 tofts of cast-iron pipe were shipped fiom the Alabama and Tennessee fields, the movement from the Bir mingham district proper having been 662.127 tons of pig-iron and 68,035 tons of pipe. Tho export shipments of pigiron from the South were 21.236 tons. The value of manufactured products In North Carolina in 19C0 was $31,919,663. an increase of 135 per cent,; of capital, $76,503,894, an increase of 133 per cent., and establishments 7226, an increase of 97 per cent. Textile No*es. The Tennessee Manufacturing Co. of Nashville, Tenn., has issuer! to its stockholders a circular suggesting a leorganization, so that the plant can be modernized as to its equipment. At the company's annual meeting, recently mentioned, the conclusion was reached that such a course as suggested Is necessary for profitable operation of the property. This mill has 2T.000 ring spindles, 6,000 mule spindles and 1,018 looms. Linn tyills Co. of China Grove, N. C..- is proceeding with the construction of its mill, and expects to commence operations early next year with 6,000 spindles installed. The site includes 100 acres of land, which have been subdivided into perfect squares for building lots, and a town is developing, C. W. Corriher is secretary of the company, and capital stock is SF.0.000. W. Scott Harvin of Manning. 3. 0.. states that the report is true he will Improve his knitting mill, now running ninety machines. However, the .improvement will merely be adding a factory for making boxes in which to make shipments of product. D. Y. Cooper of Henderson. N. C.. It is proposed at Houston, Texas, to organize a company, with capital stock of $30,000, for establishing a mill to manufacture woolen yarns ana cloth. The Business League is furthering the enterprise. It is proposed at Abbeville. S. C, to organize a company for the tree* tion of another cotton factory in that town. A spinning plant is in contemplation. P. Rosenberg is interested 1 nthe enterprise. The Hawkinsville (Ga.) Co-ton . Mills has been finally completed, af- ' ter several months' delay in reeeiv- 1 lag the machinery.
