About a month ago, in pursuance of my official duty, I wentin pursuit of the negroes from Florence County who had committed a dastardly outrage upon a helpless white lady and in my eagerness to captnre the fiends. I was on the go for five days and nights without sleep or rest and subject to much exposure which gave me fever and from the effects of which I was not sufficiently recovered to attend all the campaign meetings.
