Various rumors hare been circulated
as to why I did not attend
several of the campaign meetings,
to my detriment, I take this opportunity
of saying that it would
have given me very great pleas-1
ure to have been able to attend all
these meetings and to have met
my numerous friends, but I was
deprived of this pleasure by sickness.
About a month ago, in pursuance
of my official duty, I wentin
pursuit of the negroes from
Florence County who had committed
a dastardly outrage upon
a helpless white lady and in my
eagerness to captnre the fiends.
I was on the go for five days and
nights without sleep or rest and
subject to much exposure which
gave me fever and from the effects
of which I was not sufficiently recovered
to attend all the campaign
meetings. Respectfully
