Editor County Record: At a recent meeting of the county board 1 lie following question was submitted by resolution to candidates tor the House ot Representatives: ''Do you favor the employment of all convicts in the chain gang up to and in eluding a five years, sentence instead ot only three years as at present?" While I will not bind myself unconditionally, but reserve the right to change my views should I find it to our welfare, I now think that such a change in the law would be uuwise lor the following reasons: 1st. That the object of the chain gang was to employ criminals and jail birds to the benefit of the county, while it hail the expense of feeding and caring for them. 2nd. The Penitentiary now meets all expenses and pays a handsome revenue to the State, which lessens the burden of taxation. To take away all five year convicts would be a serious disaster to this institution and loss of revenue to the State. 3rd. 'l he present law will after awhile turnish enough labor to work the roads of the county, while the increased number of convicts in the chain gang would necessitate an increased county expense and taxation which is now a burden to the people. S W Gamble. A Final Appeal. Editor County Record:? As the primary will soon he i here, allow me through your paper to make a final appeal to those who are "on the fence'' concerning the vital issue at stake?Prohibition or Dispensaay. We ask you to whom this article is addressed, to take your bibles and look into this matter of giving your neighbor strcg drink and see! what Christ savs about it. Some I * people are fond of quoting what Paul said about wine. We are not trying to follow Paul just now but Christ alone. We believe;1 that some people would do the!" right thing if certain influences! were not brought to bear upon them to do the wrong, especially in the matter referred to. Now all [ ask is that you who are willing lobe guided by the bible look this ]uestion up and cast your vote as your conscience dictates. Get on the right side, and may God help you to stay there always. Three i million dollars tor whisky, one million for taxes. These figures i are about right, I think; if not, anvone who knows better is at l liberty to correct them.
