THE SQUARE BALE> There is an or^auiaed effort on the part of cotton dealers all over the country to induce pinners to pack the staple in what is known as the "Standard Sijoare Bale.'' After giving the matter some consideration we think that it. will be of interest both to cotton growers and ginners to know something about this movement; therefore we would call their attention to the following facts, which certainly must strike thetn forcibly. Heretofore our cotton has been packed into almost any sort of bale that the ginner found convenient and no discrimination was made against it. It seems that hereaf ter mis win uuii uo liic v>>3c. i Complaints made by .transporta lion companies and foreign mills have led to an fgitation of thie question. The former claim that much less space would be required in handling the cotton it* a uniform size baie was adopted. When the baits are of differentsizcs it is impossible to load a steamer with them without leaving Some space between the bales. This lessens the capacity ot the steamer, and in case ol fire the spaces become air channels, which cause the Humes to spread rapidly. This makes freight and insurance rates higher, and the shipper has these high rates to pay. It is also claimed that different sized bales are twisted out of shape when packed close together and the cotton is damaged when it reaches the consignees. The same argument will apply to shipping by rail. About two-thirds of our cotton is shipped to Europe, and it behooves us to to accede to the demands of the consumers of the product. After much experirpfnt the present Standard Bale was decided upon as mvinff the best results. This P* o bale is packed in press boxes 24 inches wide by 54 inches long. It has already been adopted by tlie cotton growers in the Western and the?iull States, as well as by the Convention in Atlanta, (la., last May. In the face of this we think it would be unwise on the part of our ginners to try to oppose the movement. We believe that the bales not packed in this way will be discriminated against, and with the present low price of cotton we. cannot afford to give the dealers a pretext make it still lower. It is a very simple matter to change press boxes to the required dimensions. Most of them are too large, and m-'y be brought to the proper size bv nailing boards inside so as to line the walls. The block may then be sawed off to fit the press. We would urge the giuners of this county to con iu.r well the flatter OUR SCHOOL. Of course it is the first duty the trusties to select teachers fro the most available material "lTere and to allow no personal feelit to influence their choice. Lb even with the best of teachers, tl school will not be a success unle the parents will co operate wil them. It is a most delicate an difficult mat'er for a teacher please all the patrons, and f much as possible lie should 1 made to feel that his efforts ai being seconded by those who children are committed to his car Talk up the school, encourage tf; teachers and be readv to overloo fancied errors of judgement c their part, always keepii in mind the fact that ro one in fal JibJe. The children should I taught at liome to respect the j teachers and the fact impresse upon them that instead of heir their natural enemies, theteache are simply leading them in th fight against ignorance. If theprinciples are carried out the sch<-< must be successful aud its infli ence far reaching. The outlook of our school f< another year is more encouragii than it lias been for several year past, and we believe that the ne> session will be one of the best in ii history.
