Of tlie above Spanish ships, five were destrcved, the lleinaCristina, Castiila and Don Juan de Austria. The despatches by way of Madrid report that several Spanish vessels were sunk to prevent their 1'alling into the hands oft lie Americans. This may mean that the ships not des troyed by the Americans were sunk by the Spaniards. It is at least an admission that the Amer icans had been victorious to the extent of being able to take possession of the ships. The Mindanao and Ulloa are reported as badly injured.
