The American Apialic squadron
met the Spanish fleet off the coast of
the Phillipine Islands last Sunday

were no doubt in the engagement;

Of tlie above Spanish ships, five
were destrcved, the lleinaCristina,
Castiila and Don Juan de Austria.
The Keina Cristina was burned
in action, and the Castiila burned
on a sand bar where she had

Austria was blown up. The despatches
by way of Madrid report
that several Spanish vessels were
sunk to prevent their 1'alling into
the hands oft lie Americans. This
may mean that the ships not des
troyed by the Americans were
sunk by the Spaniards. It is at
least an admission that the Amer
icans had been victorious to the
extent of being able to take possession
of the ships. The Mindanao
and Ulloa are reported as
badly injured.
