??Strengt hy" Talk About "Lengthy." Judge. Prcssly as an Blyuiologist. Dining the court last week one at torney referred to another's speech as being "lengthy," qualifying the ex pression by adding, "if such a word is good English." Judge Prcssley remarked, "It is not good English. You had as well say'bieadthy'for broad as 'length >' for long." ? AI ir berry UeraUl. The above little circumstance has created quite a stir among the brethren of the quill throughout the State. The Beaufort "Crescent." ta?es issue with Judge Presslcy, and de cides in favor of "lengthy." The Abbeville "Medium" we '.hink, agrees with the Judge. While Judge Prcssley is a capital Judge of the law, we think we can quote some very ancient ami distin guished authority against his ju lg mout in etymology. Gibbon wrote bo fore the Judge was born,in 17Go\ubuut "lengthy aud original dissertation-." Lord Byron in 181a* spoke of "some lengthy additions;" and Thomas Jcflctson discourses of 1 details too lengthy." Webster says that the word "lengthy" has been spuken of as an Americanism, but be thinks this doubtful, as it is much used by Eng lish writers. Many English words have corresponding derivatives as Wealth and health, and why not length? Where's the rule against it? These dissenters may be healthy and wealthy, but we don't think they uro wise. Gibbon in our estimation settles the matter; but as we don't wish to be lengthy, we refer the matter the Teacher's institute, The One Sludy Plan. Wo commend to the consideration of educators the one study plan suc cessfully practiced by Rev. Lan der, President of the Williamston Female College for many years. We know that it requires time for an innovation in any system, but we think a discussiou of the matter would not havo any other than a beneficial eflect. It should bo the aim of all educators to keep tip with the progress of the day, and when a plau is adopted with seeming success by so distinguished an educator as President Lander, it, is not to bo ig nored. The idea is to devote the whole of one period of time, say a month, ex clusively to one branch, cither math cmathics, classics, or general litera ture, and then at the end of the period take up another branch, d-e. Mr. Lander sa).s that the pupils like it, and that it works charmingly. To us it seems that it has the ad vantage of concentration. It keeps the mind of the pupil on one subject until it is mastered. The object of education is not so much the amass ing of kuowledgo as the training of tho young mind how to think, and the plan seems to us to be conducive to this end. We would like to hear the opinio n of some of our teachers on the sub ject. Won't some of our readers who "teach the young idea bow to shoot/' take a shot at this problem ? An Indefatigable Worker. Rev. A. T. Porter, who has just returned from a visit to Europo and Washington, in tho inlet est of his school in Charleston, delivered an address at the Church of the Holy Communion on last Sunday, setting forth the result of his labo rs. He has succeeded in getting a lease, for a long term, from the govorntnent of the Arsenal building and groun Is, and proposes great improvements by which he may accommodate live hun dred boys. The old buildings which he leaves, ho proposal to convert into a home for indigent females, which, in itself will be a great work of charity. He says that he was much encour aged in Europo, receiving nearly ?8,000 for bis enterprise; and be feels confident, if the people at homo come up to their pledges, that his scheine will be carried out to the lett er. It is certainly a matter in which the whole Zitate is interested, as the boys attending tho school coma from every County. Orangeburg County has furnished a number of pupils, and therefore our endeavor to keep all interested posted in reference, to tho noble work of this good man. His enterprise and perseverance deserve the abundant success which he has received. # Pi 0 mo ted. *A Mnjor-Gcncrul under Leo is I uurkeepcr of the Senate, and "the only man that ever whipped Sheri dan" is a clerk in the Stationery Room.
