SSiY" We are in no why rettpowdblc for the views or opinion! of our Correspond ent*. * FrTdaY, march 14. 1879. A Laconic Denial. "Wado Hampton, Jr., in denying the report lliat ho participated in the ball given in Florida in honor of Sherman, jointedly remarks, "I would certainly have avoided meet ing tho man who was guilty of tha cruelly of burning Columbia, nnd bad the cowardice to deny it." Terrible Tragedy. On Monday last nn encounter took place nt tho State House in Allan'!) between Col. 11. A. Alston, a member of ?he Georgia Legislature, and Capt. E. S. Cox, wliicli resulted in the death of tho former. Pistols wove used and several shots wer? exchanged. Capt. Cox was also wounded and is now in jail. The Coming Struggle. A cloud much bigger than a man's Land is appearing ou tho political horizon. Tho Democrats are determined to have the test oath for jurors, ami tho election laws requiring troops and U. S. supervisors at elections repealed. His Frauduleucy Hayes is equally determined ou the other sido to veto any such bill. The Democratic programme will bo to tack this provision ou to tho appropriation bill, so that if Hayes vetoes it, supplies will stop for the army and government. The positiou of tho Dein ocrats is sound, for these laws authorizing interference in any way with the elec tions in the Slates are clearly un constitutional, and wo tr.isl there will bo no retreating. Li'c e Senator Hampton we would favor Congress hitting forever, if necessary. before it receded ono inch from its | o^ilion. J A litllo thinning ofllu ;>'. > >: tha numerous government pap-suckers vrould probably alfif I :t :in:) whole some diot, and effect a rovoluiio i in the health of Washington by remov- j ing the tendency to gout an I many ol j its kindred ills. The Speakeiship. The Democratic caucus in Con j gross will soon have to decide who will be the nominee of the party for Spcuker of tho House. The danger which comes from a coalition of Republicans nnd Green backers should make t e Democrats extremely cautious. Thero is no doubt that Mr. Black burn of Kentucky is (he choice of the Southern Democrats and of tho wh.de South, but to us iL seems plain that the interest of the South an 1 the Democratic patty demands the re election of Mr. Randall of Penn pylvainia. Mr. Randall is a North crn Democrat, a splendid parliamen tarian, truo to tho South and tlx* Democracy, bus bet n died in the most difficult and stormy positions, and has always come out successfully, and withal enjoys the esteem of the North and Northwest fur bis sterling 1 integrity. Mr. Blackburn i.? able, brilliant and true, but bis nomination in cau cus w ill causa a coalition of Republi cans mid Greenback era against n> aided probably by a sprink ing ol jNorthcin Democrats, and his elec tion, if possible, will have a tendency to keep up Blame's war cry of "a sit hi Harth against a solid tonth" w hich we cannot now afford. It is poor policy, in order to elevate a favoiite, to jeopardize the interests of the mafses of llu S-'unt 1?- We are speaking for the people of tlio South, nnd not for Blackburn o Randall. And we say further that it will ncv. r do for Northern and Southern Demo crnts lo split. That's just what the Republicans want. Our only hope of constitutional government is i:i their continued co-operation. - m ? mm ? Notes By the Way. Editor Orangeburg Times: The tedium of travel is jfteii re iiovrd by objects of internst on many of the thorough litre's of our beautiful, ?uu-light Southern country. Many of the pleasant incidents of the pjst, have recently been res tamped upon my memory, on a recent trip from ! Lowisvillo, south, in the direction of Charleston. This village bus at length burst forth from its ery.uaIis of infancy and assumed a place in the category of many of the bright villages and towns of our Southern coun try. Its beauty ond order tells much upon the intelligence of i's inhabi tants and council. In pissing down the liver road, many evidences of men tal culture and tasto may be noted. The farms vary in extent an 1 modes of culture, evincing to the eye and min d the .skill and thrift of early days 'J hose on the great cotton bell is but a simile of all that are noticed on it from the Atlantic to the Missisippi rivci. The buildings, in the main, are of modern architecture, t f neat appear mice and surrounded with ornamen tal shrubbery, affording both beauty and relief, to the general sombre appearance of the fields, au 1 forests ut this season oftheyiar. The en virons of some portions of this road were once the h. bita'iou of the reptile and crane. Beautiful habi tatiotis and farms now up pear nhd instead of the hoarse croaking voices of these creatures, you hear the sweet bum of music us it swells out from the lips of the husband man as he cbceis his cum to the draught or f r* m the loved ones as they whirl the tewing machine or the distaff. J. B. ? mm ? ?ii . ? BitANc iivn.i.E, .So. Ca., March 10th 1870. .1/--. Editor: "Justice" in your issue of 7th iu>t., assumes to make some state ments nnd insinuations with regard to my political course and other matters affecting me that tire singu larly unjust. 1 will not in reply fol low his example and deal ill person alities and dark insinuations, but will address myself to the facts? foe s that can be sustained. He says I was "waited upon by several Com mittees in 1876 to know where lie (I) stood." If he means the first part of this to apply to me I say it is false. 11 is true that for a short time after the election and under the inllu* nee of excited feel ing many bard things were said, but like all ether good " Democrats I re turned peaceably to my home." He says in conclusion 1 will "only say that it the unfortunate difficulty be tween mysell and Mr. J. W. Fairy, did not occur inside of Mr. Dukes' house," w hat does be mean by this ?
