Sherman, jointedly remarks, "I

Terrible Tragedy.
On Monday last nn encounter took
place nt tho State House in Allan'!)
between Col. 11. A. Alston, a member
of ?he Georgia Legislature, and Capt.
E. S. Cox, wliicli resulted in the death
of tho former. Pistols wove used and
several shots wer? exchanged. Capt.
Cox was also wounded and is now in
jail.
The Coming Struggle.
A cloud much bigger than a man's

Tho Democrats are determined to
have the test oath for jurors, ami tho
election laws requiring troops and U.
S. supervisors at elections repealed.
His Frauduleucy Hayes is equally
determined ou the other sido to veto
any such bill.

appropriation bill, so that if Hayes
vetoes it, supplies will stop for the
army and government.

sound, for these laws authorizing
interference in any way with the elec

The tedium of travel is jfteii re
iiovrd by objects of internst on many
of the thorough litre's of our beautiful,
?uu-light Southern country. Many
of the pleasant incidents of the pjst,
have recently been res tamped upon
my memory, on a recent trip from
! Lowisvillo, south, in the direction of
Charleston. This village bus at
length burst forth from its ery.uaIis of
infancy and assumed a place in the
category of many of the bright villages
and towns of our Southern coun
try. Its beauty ond order tells much
upon the intelligence of i's inhabi
tants and council. In pissing down
the liver road, many evidences of men
tal culture and tasto may be noted.
The farms vary in extent an 1 modes of
culture, evincing to the eye and min d
the .skill and thrift of early days
'J hose on the great cotton bell is but
a simile of all that are noticed on it
from the Atlantic to the Missisippi
rivci. The buildings, in the main, are
of modern architecture, t f neat appear
mice and surrounded with ornamen
tal shrubbery, affording both beauty
and relief, to the general sombre
appearance of the fields, au 1 forests
ut this season oftheyiar. The en
virons of some portions of this road
were once the h. bita'iou of the
reptile and crane. Beautiful habi

instead of the hoarse croaking voices
of these creatures, you hear the
sweet bum of music us it swells out
from the lips of the husband man as

tewing machine or the distaff. Snider

many of the relations of trade, but

country. Below this devoted place,
are found the residences of some, whose
loss we deplore, but whose names we

grandeur of its design and finish, the

A slight, dry cough is sometimes an

tion of the skin; his spirits arc low;
and although he is satisfied thai exer
cise would l>e beneficial to him, yet
he can scarcely summon up fortitude
