On Monday last a whito man call ing himself J. W. Smith presented an order for 630.50 to Messrs. J. O. Piko & Co., purporting to be signod by Mr. Henry Snell, representing tho case so plainly as to throw the mout hers of tho firm completely off their guard and cause them to pay the amount. This man had beon staying with Mr. Snell under the name of Williams for some timo and gained by familiar conversations an insight into tho affairs of that gontloman which enable tho forger to practino tbe imposition upon Mr. Piko. Leay ing Messrs. Pike & Co., bo proceeded to Mr. Frank Slater and hired a horso evidently with tho purpose of making his escape, but fortunately some boys while tensing a foolish white man near, called out stop thief! catch thief! and Smith, who bad entered the bar, hearing tho cry, supposed it was meant for him and hastily made! bis csoapu leaving Mr. Slatoi 's horse lied ill the rack. From here Smith went tu Mr J. El. Dukes near the town and representing him self as Redmond, tlioouc law, induced Mr. Dukes to aid him in his escape from the revenue officers iii hot pur. suit. He was carried to a Mr. Daw ton in .Barhwcll, brother of the Methodist preacher by that num.), who gave him $100 and advised him to go to his home. At Matthews' littiII* he took a boat and thus escaped. Mr. Oukes learned fro in on n versa lion with Smith that he was nothing more than a desperado, and that re wards had beeii oirbred ibr bis cap ture. We would take this occasion to can ion our people against conti 1 ; ing a knowledge of their affairs to s rangers and especially to those who j come with such a doubtful record as J. W. Smith. j The occasion of the meeting of the. j Ornng burg District Conference, M. K. Church South, was introduced by I an able serin >n preach ;d in the Methodist Church at this place on Wednesday night last by Rev. N. K. Melton. The audience was very en couraging, and many delegates com ing liom abroad to attend this first exorcise, were noticed to compose a large part of it. At 9 oMock on Thursday. Rev Wm. M. Mnrtin opened the Confer ence by religious service, and Mr. -Hook was elected Secretary with Rev. D. Z. Dantzler to assist him. The business to bo transacted was the arrangement of tbe bar and the hours for business and religious service. It was ordered that the Conference meet at 9 o'clock a.m. for business and IIa. m. for preaching, 4 o'clock, p. M. for business and 8i o'clock for preaching. Bishop Whitman having arrived on the morning train entered the conference room at 4 p m. and called for reports of the diilcrout Circuits and Stations belonging to tbe Dis trict, all of which were very gratify ing to the Bishop and brethren pre sent?so much so as to call forth from the Presiding officers a warm and eloquent address of encourage ment to his co-laborers in the vine yard of our Lord. Sueh words of love can scarcely fall short of tho mark, and we believe that many will return to their fields with bolder hearts and more determined wills to do the Master's work. At 8A o'clock Rev. D. Z. Dantzler preached a most interesting seiniou on l be relationship wo sustain to God as dispensers of light or religious truth. The calm and humble spirit of tbe minister gave diguity to bis manm r and an interest to the occa sion which won the attention of his entire audience. Rov. Mr. Dantzler is a young man of no ordinary mind and gives promise of a most useful life to the church. Friday? Morning Session ? Con ference met at nine o'clock, Bishop Wbiteman in the chair. Rev. John Inabiiiet conducted the opening services. The call for reports from Circuits and Stations was continued until 10 o'clock, Ihe hour appointed for the lecture of Dr. E. J. Meuar dio on the Columbia Female Col logo. This was delivered iu the usual happy style 61 the Doctor, advocating the education of tho daughters of our State more than the sons, and asking for a more extensivo patronage by the members of the church for the col I ego. The hour for public worship hav* ing arrived, the Rev J. H. Zimmer man preached und tbe Uev. M. A. McKibben closed the sor yiccs. - ? m i ? . Laboratory of the System, Tl e stomach is the laboratory of the sys tem, in which certain mysterious processes arc constantly going on. These result in the production ofthat wonderful vivifying agent the blood, which in a state of health rushes laden with the elements of vitality to the remotest parts of the system, llu when the stomach is semi-paralyzed by dys pepsia blood manufacture is carried on itu-t perfectly, the circulation grows thin and sluggish, and the system suffers inconse quence. Moreover, indigestion reacts upon the liver and bowels, rendering the first sluggish and tho latter constipated. The brain also sutlers by sympathy, and Hick headaches, sleeplessness and nervous symp toms are engendered. IIo?tctter,s Stomach Hitters reforms this state of things, gives permanent tone and regularity to tho Stom ach and its associate organs, the bowels and live, and ensures complete nourishment and increased vigor of the system.
