On Monday last a white man call ing himself J. W. Smith presented an order for $30.00 to Messrs. J. G. Pike & Co., purporting to be signed by Mr. Henry Snoll, representing the case so plainly as to throw the mom bors of the firm completely off their guard and cause them to pay tho amouut. This man had boon staying with Mr. Sncll under the name of Williams for some timo and gained by familiar conversations an insight into tho affairs of that gontloman which enable tho forger to practino tho imposition upon -Mr. Pike. Lcav ing Messrs. Pike & Co., ho proceeded to Mr. Frank Slater and hired a hor?o evidently with tho purpose of making his escape, but fortunately some boys while teasing a foolish white man near, called out atop thief! catch thief! and Smith, who had entered the bar, hearing tho cry, supposed it was meant for him and hastily ma le bis esoapo leaving Mr. Slatoi's horse tied at the rack. Prom here Smith went to Mr J. El. Dukes near the town and representing him self as Redmond, tho otic law, induced Mr. Dukes to aid him in his escape from the revenue officers in hot pur. suit. He was carried to a Mr. Daw ton in .Bartiwell, brother of the Methodist preacher by that nanu, who gave him $10') and advised him to go to his home. Al Matthews' Iiinit" he took a boat and thus escaped. Mr. Dukes learned from uo indorsa tion with Smith that he was nothing more than a desperado, and that re* wards had been olfcred lor his cap tint. We would take this occasion to can ion our people against confid ing a knowledge of their affairs to s rangers and especially to those who come with such a doubtful record as J. W. Smith. The audience was very en couraging, and many delegates com ing horn abroad to attend this iirst exercise, were noticed to compose a large pnrt of it. At 9 o'? lock on Thursday, Rev Wm. M. Martin opened the Confer ence by religious service, and Mr. - Hook was elected Secretary with Rev. D. Z. Dantzler to assist him. The business to be transacted was the arrangement of the bar and the hours for business and religious service. It was ordered that the Conference meet atU o'clock a.m. for business and 11a. m. for preaching, 4 o'clock, p. m. lor business and 8i o'clock for preaching. Bishop Whitman having arrived on the morning train entered the conference room at 4 p m. and called for reports of the different Circuits and Stations belonging to the Dis trict, all of which were very gratify ing to the Bishop and brethren pre sent?so much so as to call forth from the Presiding officers a warm | and eloquent address of encourage ment to his co-laborers in the vine yard of our Lord. Such words of love can scarcely fall abort of the mark, and we believe that many will return to their fields with bolder hearts and more determined wills to do the Master's work. At 8* o'clock Rev. D. Z. Dantzler preached a most interesting setmon on the relationship we sustain to God as dispensers of light or religious truth. The calm and humble spirit of the minister gave dignity to his 1 manntr and on interest to the occa sion which won the attention of his entire audience. Rov. Mr. Dantzler is a young man of no ordinary mind and gives prorai so of a most useful life to the church. Friday? Morning Session ? Con ference met at nine o'clock, Bishop Whiteman in the chair. Rev. John I mihi net conducted tho opening services. The call for reports from Circuits and Stations was continued until 10 o'clock, the hour appointed for the lecture of Dr. E. J. Meuar dio on the Columbia Female College This was delivered in the usual happy style of the Doctor, advocating the education of tho daughters of our State more than the sons, and asking for a more extensivo patronage by the members of the church for tho college. The hour for public worship hav ing arrived, the Rov J. H. Zimmer man preached and the Rev. M. A. McKibbcn closed the sor vices. Tho Laboratory of the System, Tl c stomach is the laboratory of the sys tem, in which certain mysterious processes are constantly going on. These result iu the production of that wonderful vivifying agent the blood, which in a state of health rushes laden with the elements of vitality to the remotest parts of the system. Bu when the stomach is semi-paralyzed by dys pepsia blood manufacture is carried on Im-t perfectly, the circulation grows thin aud sluggish, and the system suffers in conse quence. Moreover, indigestion reacts upon the liver and bowels, rendering the first sluggish and the latter constipated. The brain also sutlers by sympathy, and sick headaches, sleeplessness and nervous symp l toins are engendered. Hosteller's Stomach Hitters reforms this Ftate of things, gives permanent tone and regularity to the Stom ach and its Associate organs, the bowels and liver, und ensures complete nourishment and increased vigor of the system.
