J Then own is, to Everybody’s Delight, Lighted by Electricity. f The electric lights are hero ! •They were turned on in afl their L fullness en Monday night, si The town lias been without these lights ev j r since the as signment of the Darlington Light, Water and Power Coin pany last spring, which grew out of the famous Cox trouble. The Darlington Light aud Wa ter Company, successsor to the old company, has restored the lights and is in a better position to do the work than its predeces sor, as will be seen by Jie fob lowing comparison in the capa cities of the old engines and boilers which were taken way and the new ones which have been purchased in their stead. The new engines are of the “Buckeye” make and their ca pacities are 75 and do horse-pow er respectively, while the capa cities of the old engines were 50 and 25. The capacities of the new boilers are 80 horse power each and of the old 50 each. The plant in its present condition can run 750 incandes cent and 05 arc lights, whereas, formerly, it could only run 520 incandescent and 25 arc lights. Mr. J. J. Forman, the effici ent superintendent of the plant for the old company, will con tinue in the same position for the new, and he will see to it that the lights are always kept “trimmed and burning.” The town is now using 10 arc lights, but it is not improbable that this number will be increased as several sections of the town are in need of lights. “An act to prohibit the sale, loan or wearing of lioopskirts or crinoline. “The people of the State of New York, represented in Sen ate and Assembly, do enact as follows : “Section 1. As a matter of fact, it is difficult to write of the wonderful life that Mr. Clarke throws into his creations. The genius of his race and breeding is apparant in every facial muscle and his every movement. It requires no pro phet, nor yet the son of a pro phet to see in Wilfred Clarke the Jefferson or the Owens of the “fin de siecle.” KEELEY FOR DARLINGTON. It is Rumored that an Institute for this Great Cure Will be Located Here. It is rumored, nnd we think the rumor has considerable foundation, that a branch insti tution of the famous Keeley cure for the whiskey, morphine and tobacco habits will be establish ed in Darlington. The head in stitution, as is well known, is located at Dwight, 111 , and the State institution forSouth Caro lina is located at Columbia. In view of the narrow streets in the lower part of New York city the use of crinolines by women would make it im possible for a man to navigate. Therefore the bill ought to go to the committ;ee on commerce and navigation, and this was done. Mr. Smith read a statement to the effect that he did not intro duce the bill in any spirit of levity, but to call the attention of women of common sense to the silly demands of fashion. The Georgia City Meets With Bet ter Luck than Our State [The Stated Augusta has been selling some of her 4i per cent, thirty year bonds. There were eleven bid ders, and five of them had rep resentatives in the city looking after their interests. Chicago, Boston, Cleveland and New York were among the cities rep resented in the bidding. Four of the bids were above par, and none of the others fell below 99. Governor Tillman’s magnificent financiering has disposed of South Carolina 4i percent, forty year bonds at 97}. Mr. Golden Rhind, who shared in the “soft snap” afforded by the Governor, bid 99.25 for the Augusta bonds. It is not untimely to repeat that Governor Tillman, according to his own confession of silence, cost the State of South Carolina $180,000 in the placing of her bonds.
