*>■ Energy In AdrertUing. Tlioroughnea*, industry and tact are necessary in writing and keeping up a ! scries of paying announcements. Read ers nowadays demand variety in what •they read, whether it be in their liter- *ary matter, their news or tiieir adver tisements. Monotony tires them. Brev ity and spice are absolutely essential to success in advertising. Every mcr chant can, with profit, study the meth ods employed by large advertisers in attracting attention to their wares. It is not necessary that the style of any one of them be copied literally, but jxmits can be secured from each and all which will be of assistance in work ing up a series of remunerative an nouncements. Eacli advertiser should use such suggestions as come in his way for all there is iti them, adapting them to his own particular needs. Alx>vo all things never advertise your competitor by scolding about him. Ad vertise your own goods and get all the return you can for your money. The Spaniards were the l>cst dressed men in Europe in the Fifteenth cent ury. They were the (irst to introduce the more saddish colors, as they were termed, in race's attire—an Innovation that was accepted by well dressed men the world over. When King Philip married Queen Mary, of England, the exquisites took up the Spanish vogue, which was maintained for many years thereafter. Philip Sydney, Sir Walter Raleigh, and others of the royal set were the llrst to assume the costume of the Spanish origin and make it the fashion. It consisted of a very easy doublet fitting the b'sly, the trunks to tlje knees expanded artificially, and be low tbe hose. The colors wore dark. Sir Walter Raleigh's white velvet suit decorated witli pearls was a bold devia tion from the usage of the times. It was worn at Queen Elizabet h's ball and has been immortaUz.ed on canvas.— Clothier and Furnisher.
