Up to this time the grand jury has made no report; but we hope to pub ' lishjt in'our ne xt issue. The time for the payment of taxes without penalty has been extended to January 30th. There ought to be a longer extension, but we are informed that this is the last. It is recommended by Pro fessors White and Shepard, celebrated chemists, from which we would judge it is worth a trial. A cotton bale was stolen from the depot on Thursday night, and droppod in the viciuity of the Free Citizen office, where, doubtless, the thief was either overtaken by daylight or seared by some noise. We believe the de tectives are on the track; but wc have not yet heard of any positive clue to the thief. f.-~~ Oi:r town was nearly destroyed simply because the fire department was deficient in machines, and there was a lack of water. With this expe rience before us will the people of Or nngeburg refuse to get steam engines and fire-wells? Wc have lost $200, 000, which might have been saved by an expenditure in this line of $40,000. Then again, the lighter rate of. in surance. Let us profit by the lessons of the past. Court Commenced here on Monday with more than usual interest. Judge Reed, the newly elected judge of this circuit, made his first appearance hero in a public capacity since his celebrated Democratic speech in 18tf8. Although his head is some what whitened by time, wo recognize him still-as "the little man from the mountains" that lie I egged his hear ers to remomber?and they do remem ber, Ho niiido at that time an excel lent Democratic speech,, which we trust will not now prevent his making a good judge. His charge to the grand jury was highly coin mended for its fullness, itg earnestness and appa rent sincerity, and creates tho hope that ho will endeavor to bring the guilty to justice He presides .with more than usual dignity; and in ncuts ness of perception and quickness in deciding intricate points ot law, he is doubtless tho equal of Judgo Curpen ter; In the morning tho cnse~ of the State vs. P. J. M?sts, Jr., and J. L. Humbert, for broach of trust with fraudulent intent, whs culled. Solici tor Bultz stated that anol. pros, was entered at the last term, but that a new indictment would now. be given against both parties. In the case of Humbert for official misconduct the Solicitor said that he was informed that Attorney-General Melton would conduct the prosecution himself. On Tuesday no cases of general in-1 terest were taken up except that of j the State vs. Wm. Auld, for the raur- \ der of-Gholson. Friday was fixed as the day of trial. Humbert's trial was set for Wednes day, but it is two near our press time to give any of the particulars until our next issue. We were in the court house a few moments, and from our observation we thiulc all?judge, lawyers and jury, w?re doing tolerably well?in fact, as well, if not better, that* many we saw outside. We are pained to learn of the re cent affliction of Rev. A. I. Hartley, the beloved pastor of Antioch Baptist Oburch, in the death of his estimable wifo, on Tuesday, January 12th. Mrs. Amanda Hartley possessed all those estimable Christian virtues which made her character truly lovely to all who knew her. She will be sorely missed in the family circle, and by the congregation of Antioch to whom she had endeared herself as the pastor's wife. She leaves a babe but one day old. Our heartfelt sympa thies are with the bereaved, who will find comfort in the death of the righteous, by lifting their thoughts beyond this vale of tears.
