I have raid no thing, that is no proof of their belief. I have noticed iu the Agricultural columns of the Times that none of the fanners Iinvo been writing for that department, and I think its beginning to bo time to commence. February has come in, and all who intend to plant a crop aud tend it, should commence now. Fanning, Mr. Editor, is not what it is cracked up to be by some people. If we plant a crop, we must certainly work it, and if we tend it good, wo will surely reap the fruits of our labor. By tho "sweat of the brow" \vc must gain our livelihood, but unless \vc take advantugc of every short turn nnd think more than we do it will bo found a hard task to gain a living, that way. Your's &c. Inquisitive. Balky Horses. Balking is a serious defect in a very useful animal, and it connot be overcome by whipping or swearing at him. His brain docs not seem capable of entertain ing but one thought at a time, and the stubborn resolve not to move seems to be uppermost in it. Therefore you must endeavor to give him a new sul jeet of | thought, and thereby change the direc tion of his brain. The simple trick of putting a small quantity of earth or gravel, taken from the road-side, upon his tongue, will suffice to turn his attention to the new kind of fodder offered to him. Now cluck to him but don'strike him, and almost before ho is aware of it be ia walking along and aud soon trpts as fast as i? needful. This is a remedy much in use on the western plains, where teaming is employed to per form a vast amount of labor, and balky horses arc quite a common trouble. I have seen it work to perfection on the plains of Colorado, when whipping and profanity were utterly ineffectual; a very smnll quantity of earth and fine gravel; mado its-mark directly. Kindness will always produce n great effect upon horses, and every driver should learn that pleas ant words and tones are of much greater use in making his homes obedient than tho whiplash, mingled with harsh oaths and car-splitting tones. s. o. j. ?
