See'obange of advertjsm->nt to-day, and yoU will find they are up to tho times, (as well as in the Times), and intend keeping' thoro. A very neat awning has Ijeeu erected by them on the street, which will ho gratefully patronized this suin-j mer by many an overheated mortal. The extreme neatness which pervades; their Btore, the liberal prices charged and uniform politeness shown to all customers, make the store of Messrs. J. W. Patrick I & Co.', a most inviting place to visit. BUTTER. ? We had the pleasure of seeing sundry rolla of butter which our friend"1 D'rV tV. F. Barton brought from his farm. The color and firmness was all that butter should be, and tho flavor was equal to the ehoicet Qoshen. SURVIVORS ASSOCIATION. The members of this Society, who are iu arrears, are earnestly requested to set tle up their dues, before the next meeting. The Society at Orangeburg, is in debt to the State Association, and it is of great importance, thut the matter be attended to at once. Call on the Treasurer, a Citizens Savings Bank. ALMOST A FIRE. On Friday afternoon last/while the saw of the shingle factory was ripping at the rate of a thousand an hour, some sparks communicated with the loose shavings around, and the fire threatened to destroy the building. The strenuous and prompt measures used put a stop to the fire. ?'- ? ?' ? ? - RAIN AT LAST! Alter a mouth of intensely ary weath er, made more so b}' the constant winds, we were blessed with a splendid shower on Monday morning, which was hailed with delight by hundreds of farmers, whose crops were suffering. Wo hope soon to report a good stand of cotton from all sections of the. country. FROST, IN APRIL. A heavy frost fell on Friday night, of last week, doing considerable injury to tender vegetables. We happened to be coming from Charleston on Saturday morning, and- could see tho damage done on market farms in the suburbs, particu larly to the Irish potato crop. TO Ol li MERCHANTS. i We b-?g to suggest that,,in order to allow clerks and other parties, whose time is not their own, to attend the Tour nament, the stores be closed, say between ?.he hours of 11 A. M. and 3 P. M. Hol idays are scarce as hens teeth to the above mentioucd parties, and surely nothinu will he lost by those liberal merchants, who now have the opportunity of grant ing a little indulgence to their employees. RAIL ROAD AVENUE GROCERY STORE. The store of Mr. J. S. Albergotti at the head of Rail Road Avenue, is admirably situated, and commands a large trade in consequence. Jt is convenient to all living in the Eastern portion of the town, especially to those across the Rail Road, who can purchase front Mr. Albergotti everything obtainable at $*Ffjft8T class grocer? store. We crill attention to his new advertisement in to days' issue, and advise you to give him a trial, which is all he asks for. ATTEMPT AT MURDER AND ROBBERY. Wniio Mr. Graham the operator for the Western & Union Telegraph Com pany was returning from his office at the depot on Monday night to his home, by the way of tho Kew Street, ho was sud denly fired upon bj a man, who sprang out from behind a fence. The ball cut through his vest passing Out without do ing injury. Mr. Graham'fortunately was armed, and returned the fire, which is supposed to have wounded the villain, as he ran off, and blood wns found the next morning whore the attack occurred. '1 here are strange characters among us, who had better be looked after. We have warned the public before, and again repent that it is the duty of every ono to have an eye to such as have no visible raeaufl of support among us. THE TOURNAMENT TO-DAY.; Wo confess to a feeling of disappoint ment that this issue of our paper, which is published boforc tho display of to-day, cannot contaiu an account of tho pleas ures in store for every one fortunnte enough to witness tho Tournament. It is too late, even to urge Upon our people (as we endeavored to do }ast week !?) to put aside the plow for a single day, and accompany the youujffblkstotho annual May-day festival. ' lib will relievo the monotony of farm' life, and pleasant' memories of a happy day spent will liri\ gor in their hearts, lightening their cares during the weary summer months. We take-it for granted that everybody and his sweetheart will bo there, bent upon enjoyment, and certain to obtain it.' Many a maiden heart will flutter at the thought of being crowned "Queen of love ancrbeauty," or (what is next best) ono of her "Maids of honor." Orangebur_Pmay well be proud of the spirit shown by her young men, i? keep ing up this manly amusement; proving that our people are still alive, and not dead, as some will have it; showing to strangers without the Stato, and croakers within, that in spite of misrule and cor ruption in high places, our spirits are undaunted, and our confidence in the fu ture unchanged. Let our rulers, then, prevaricate to their hearts content, and misappropriate until the funds ?ro gone, but we?are going to the Tournament! -?? ? -? PICHLS preparation lately introduced to the A Agricultural world, appear from recent ex periments to surpass all Unit has ever been at tempted in that line. It not only contains all the elements and lit food for the seed in its in fant state, which enables it to come up strong and vigorous, Inn positively, claimed that no rust, Hmut or blight can exist where it is ap plied, and proving a certain preventive against the potato rot. It dissolves readily, and forms a niuf?ugc by which any material eau be made to adhere to "the seed. Coal Tar being a very small proportion of this valuable compound to prevent the ravages of birds and insects, but so united and prepared as to form a dry powder, which dissolves readily, one pound producing one and a half gallons, or llftecn pounds of mu cilage. On every farm there are to be found in abundance valuable materials for rolling seed in before planting, which should never he neg lected. These are rieh dry black earth and woop ashes, or lime, and should be mixed in proportion of one part of wood ashes, or lime, to four parts of earth.
