First Spring Advertisement First in war, first in peace, and first (this Spring) into the pockets of their countrymen ! And they deserve to be, nr> Messrs. T. Tournament. All persons in ?rnngcburg County wishing to take part in a Tournament and Bull to be given at Orangeburg C. II,, Ajbout 1st May, will please hand in iheir names to Mr. J. W. Patrick. The number of Knights will be limited to fifty. T. A. JEFFORDS. Bgk. We learn that tho proposed sue cessor of the late Judgo Lee (colored j jud c of the inferior court) presents as a recommendation of fitness a favorable endorsement from the State penitentiary where b? served a time for wife murder and afterward for larceny. Such is the pure source from which justice flows in South Carolina. The bud condition of Rail Road Avon uc from the store of Mr. J. S. Albcrgotti to the Depot, has been the cause of two accidents during the past week. Fortunately no' ouo was seriously in jured, but the vefy Harrow escape of the child of Mr. W. E. McMichacl, on Thurs day last, caused by the deep holes in ?he Avenue, was utmost miraculous. The sudden stopping 6F Clio horse was all that saved the life of the little one, which had fallen from its nurses' arms out of | the buggy?one of the wheels Iravtrig suddenly entered a deep rut. Will not tho Town Council attend to this muCtcr at or.ee ? If longer neglected, our City Father? will be responsible for everynceident ocen'ring fronf the state of the Avenue. ? <>- ? New Finn*. Messrs. John W. Patrick, and Leland Ilngnod, have formed a copartnership under name of John W. Patrick & Co., and have opened at stand lately occupied by Mr. T. G. Viuce, next door to Dr. A. C. Dukes* Drug Store. Mr. Patrick has been long known as the courteous and competent nssistmt of Messrs."V<5s'c & Izhir, and is thoroughly qualified for the business he has Under taken. Mr. HagQod who lately moved to our town from Barnwell, isa thorough going business man and n pleasant gen tleman. Such men are a great, acquisi tion to a business community like ours. They will keep a complete stoe-k' of first class dry-goods, notions, shoes, &c, and ;vc speak the sentiments of every one, when we wish the new concorn great suc cess, end a'long lease df lAiriifcss pros peri t v-'. 2nd Annual Tournament 1 With great pleasure wc adnbuifco that steps arc now being taken to have an other Tournament, about the first of May. A notice to that effect is in our advertising columns 1 This beautiful and healthful amuse ment should become an annual thing with our young men, who are sadly enough off for recreation of a harmless character. Let them come forward at once and send in their namcB to Mr. J. W. Patrick, who was so activo in making tho last Tournament a splendid success. The number of Knights Will, very pro perly, bo 1 united to fifty; so make your preparations now, and enter the l?0**' "q yf^bw6.butjux'.j&ort weeks for prac tice. j The same ground has, been obtained which was used last year?and a very ad mirable place it is! ; 7 It is sufficient to say that Capt. T. A.' Jeffords and Mr. Patrick have the affair in hand; so its success is assured! Wo can manage to survive this year, with the Tournament in May, arid tbe,j Agricultural Pair in October. Attention Fire Department! .. # . We have received from a leading Fire Insurance Company, a cut representing the Gaidncr Fire Extinguisher, which "VYAi^.requested to bring to the notice of our Firo Department. It has been adopted by the Charleston Department and is coming into:g?ncrdl ?se through out the country. To a town like ours they will be invaluable lit tbo iricipieney of a fire,, since by their help a conflagra tion may bo prevented which in fifteen minutes, would defy tbo whole Fite De partment; j Rates of insurance are high and the wholo community will be aided by the purchase of a couple or more of these machines. What say you, Mr. Chief ? 6an our town afford to bo with out them ? If it can, no harm has been done! If it cannot, now is the time to J act! Grand Entertainment by Messrs. Stroble, Aldricli, & Co. On Saturday afternoon last a party of Gentlemen were invited by tli3 cpurtcous firm of Messrs. ?tr?bel, Al&rfch & Co., to taKe a sail in their new Flat, which was launched the evening before. At about three or four o'clock, Mr. Meronys Omnibus came to carry the party down tq the old landing. About twelve or fifteen gentlemen jumped in, then "crack went the whip and round went the wheels, were ever folks so glad?'" They arrived at the landing safe and sound aud saw the tasty little en a ft mocrcd .in a little dock. As soon as tb ?y saw it every one went for that Flat bottomed Boat. Thjiy had to cross a little bridge before getting to j the boat, and some otio remarked (and we shrewdly suspect the "Capt") that this was a bridge of (.small)!) sighs. Mr. J. F. Harlcy undertook to pilot them up the river, with the help of four or five bands; alter sailing a little way, someone proposed a stop; when Mr. Brow ning moved that a committee of one, consisting of Mr. Dibble, be appointed to name this craft. . Mr. Dibble then arose nnd spoke; "Wishing Messrs. Strubel, Aldrich.oi <>., success, &c, be announced the name, which 61uggards will not like, but which U pleasing to the car of a shingle manu facturer, uanicly "Day Dawn," hoping thnt it may prove the dawn of many oilier enterprises," &c. Mr. Strobel then responded with a few well chosen words, intimating that he expected prosperity, but if he-did not Succeed, he being of a happy tempera ment, it would not kill him. Some one then suggcs^ecl, that a bottle ought to be broken, and another proposed that it bean empty one, which .hitter suggestion was curried out iu a very.graceful man ner by one of the party. They then started on their trip. Then up the Etlislo they went With hearts nude light by ale, And many predicted on hoard that boat That S. A. & Co., will never fail. [Potts.] As there were ho romantic people on boaid, we cannot do justice to the scene ry, not to the "lall oaks from which lit tle acorns grow," or the massive cypress trees, which will soon bo turned into shingles affording shelter to the widows and fatherless at ?? per thousand! nor yet to the frogs, w ho with their melodious tunes, reminded us very forcibly of the Boston Jubilee. They came down as they went a merry crew*. On landing the folloging resolution was adopted: "Resolved, That the passengers who wcie invited to bo present at tho land ing, nn<l shared in '.ho pleasure Of the trial trip of the 'Day Dawn' arc greatly indebted to Messrs. Strobel, Aid rich <fc Co., nnd to Capt. Harlcy, for a very pleasant and delightful trip. And that they unite, in wishing Messrs. Strobel, A Id rich & Co., much success in their new undertaking and trust, the. 'Pay Dawn' may soon be one of many boats .rfjaoh the Edi?to, to testify to' the energy '?pd perseverance ?f said company, and may thoy all bo commanded by ono as genial as Capt. Harloy." Mr. Strobel says that in less than six months hb wiii have a steamboat here! On their return the ride through the town in an omnibus and fotir created quite a sensation. -. ^ ? - Loot out next week, for an Inter estingletter from Mr. A. Snodgrnss, who will occasionally givo us a letter from Charleston. His" first letter came too late for insertion this week. lhuldlng Material.
