(Continued from Page 1) restoration of the Opera House as a more suitable location for the production of plays. He said members of the theatre and the Newberry Coun ty Historical Society met re cently with George Settles, who was instrumental in the drive to restore the Abbeville Opera House. McCutcheon said that after meeting with Settles, the group concluded that the only way to get the Opera House restored is to “get in and start work ing.” “We would like to take the initiative to do some of that work ourselves,” he said. He asked council for permission to get started with some sort of work to restore the Opera House as a theatre. He noted that federal funds are available for such projects. McCutcheon asked Council to consider leasing the Opera House to the Players for a specified period so that they could work for the restoration. Council members voiced their approval for the project and took the requests as informa tion for further study. Mayor Shealy said the city would have an engineer determine what it would take to fix up the in side of the building. Council voted to proceed with having Bess Street paved. A petition was received from property owners requesting the paving. Based on the city code, the property owners will be respon sible for payment of one-half the cost of paving and the city will pay the other half. The total cost is estimated at $3980. BY-THE-WAY . . . (Continued from Page 1) ed from the Humphreys, Mc Governs and Muskies yet. I still hold to my belief stat ed some months back that Teddy Kennedy will be the De mocrats banner carrier, but if so, he will be in for a hard time. I mentioned to one of my lawyer friends who I thought was a Democrat that he could go to Columbia and hear Teddy when he spoke at the conven tion of the S. C. Education As sociation. His reply was, “I couldn’t believe him any more than I believe the witness we just had on the stand.” So— people haven’t forgotten the little incident involving Teddy a year or so ago but the na tional news media is doing all in its power to try to make the public forget. One cannot - pick up a national magazine without seeing some sentimen tal story about the senator, by the senator, by the senator’s wife, by the senator’s mother. It’s disgusting. I’ll vote for Nixon. BAND CONCERT . . . (Continued from Page 1) Jack Pruitt, Kenneth Pruitt (de ceased); Olin Keighley (deceas ed) and James Senn.
