Harold Koon, Newberry County Republican Chairman, announced today that Senator Strom Thurmond’s Washington Office has appointed Miss El len Altman of Newberry as an Intern for the month of January. Ellen is a sophomore at New berry College where she serves as a member of the Campus Re elect Thurmond Committee and currently serves also as Secre tary of the Newberry County Young Republicans. Miss Alt man is a former Miss New berry College Republican, Miss Merry Christmas 1970 and Miss South Carolina TB-RD Girl 1971 representing the SC Tuber culosis and Respiratory Disease Association. Presently she serves as a Campus Represen tative for the National Founda tion-March of Dimes. Ellen is a sister of Kappa Delta Sorority on campus. Ellen’s parents are Mr. C. S. Altman of Newberry and Mrs. C. S. Altman of Sumt er. Koon stated, with these four appointments, Newberry College has had eight students repre senting the college in Senator Thurmond’s office within the last 2 and a half years. This serves as evidence of the sena tor’s interest in our student pop ulation and effort at channelling student activism into construc tive practical political activity. I am confident that these four interested students will grasp a better meaning of politics and public service by serving in Washington and will seek ways to implement their collective concerns upon returning to the Newberry College Campus in February.” Seal campaign reported short Contributions to the Annual Christmas Seal Campaign are $327,266. This is as of Decem ber 27, 1971, and is $85,505 short of the goal of $412,771. The area served by the Area Six Branch Office, which is comprised of Abbeville, Edge- field, Greenwood, Laurens, Mc Cormick, Newberry, and Salu da Counties, has received con tributions of $26,257. This is $7,336.01 less than its goal of $33,594. “Colorful reminders are be ing mailed to all those who have not answered their Christmas Seal letter”, said W. Harold Koon, Project Director of the Area Six Branch Office, “for I would like to emphasize a- gain, it is not too late to send in your Christmas Seal contri bution. Mr. Aull is a very busy man and a great civic minded citizen. He is Publisher and Editor of The Ridge Citizen, a scoutmaster with over 25 years service. He holds the Scout- er’s Key and has received the Silver Beaver award. He is a member of St John’s Lutheran Church, Johnston Lion’s Club, a member of American Legion Post 154 and the Board of Di rectors of The United Appeal. He is married and he and Mrs Aull are the parents of two children, a son and a daughter. Mr. Aull will be remembered in Newberry as the son of the late Colonel and Mrs. E. H. Aull of 1014 Boundary Street. He is better known in New berry as just plain “Luke”. He has four full brothers, one of them is with him in Johnston, S. C., the others are scattered over North and South Carolina. These five brothers came late in life for the late E. H. Aull and he very proudly called them The Great American Boys.
