The Newberry Sun, Newberry, S. C., Thursday, Sept. 23, 1971—PAGE 5 Newberry wins 2nd contest Newberry made it two in a row by downing Gardner-Webb 20-0 on a rain soaked field Saturday night at Boiling Springs, N. C. A heavy drizzle continuing up until the start of the game slowed the offensive units ana kept both from scoring in the first half. Newberry’s spirit was not drenched though and quar- erback Tommy Williamson threw two touchdown passes in the second half—one a six-yard toss to Johnny Dawkins and the other a nine-yard throw to Howdy Hays. The final touch down came in the final stanza with a 21-yard gallop by All- American candidate Don Gar rick. Garrick also kicked the two extra points. The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs had several drives nipped in the bud by mistakes. One Bull dog drive penetrated as far as the Indian 5 yard line, but the Indian defense took over and stopped the drive. The Bulldogs threw five passes that were complete and five that were intercepted by the Indians. Newberry picked up 189 yards on the ground in 39 carries while the host squad gained 146 yards in 29 attempts. The pass ing game for the squads was about even; Newberry hit on five passes for 42 yards and Gardner-Webb also completed five passes for 40 yards. On the penalty side of the ledger, the Bulldogs were push ed back for 60 yards and the Indians for 45 yards. Newberry’s freshman Bruce Remillard punted seven times for a 35.7 average while Johnny Phillips led Gardner-Webb for an average of 34.9 yards in eight kicks.
