Ed Hazel, Newberry Fire Chief, and William Smith, co-chairman Fire Prevention Week for the Exchange Club of Newberry (Sunphoto) Bulldog club meets Monday Special musical program slated at Glenn Street The choir of the Glenn Street Baptist Church will present a special program on Sunday night, October 3, at 7:30 P.M. The thirty-six voice choir will sing some of the old hymns along with several of the new sounds in music. M. J. “Buck” Hooper, Mini ster of Music, of the Glenn Street Church states that the program will have an evange listic appeal. Solos, duets, trios, and other ensembles will be featured along with the choir. Within the past eighteen months the choir at Glenn Street has grown from fifteen to the present thirty-six voices. Mrs. P. K. Fuller is the pianist and Miss Cindy Amick, organist. This musical will open a week of preparation for the Church Revival scheduled for October 10-17. During the week there will be five cottage prayer meetings. Tuesday will find a massive visitation effort by the Church and Saturday has a large youth rally planned under the leader ship of Mrs. T. H. Smith, P. K. Fuller, Daniel Suggs, and Bland Berry. Reverend Donald F. West is pastor. Russell named “man of year” by gas group Roland R. Russell of Colum bia, will be honored as “Gas Man of the Year” by the South eastern Gas Association at its annual banquet here tomorrow night. Russell has been service su pervisor in gas operations for South Carolina Electric and Gas Company in Columbia since 1948. The Newberry, native began his gas industry career in 1924 as a pipe fitter’s helper in Or lando, Fla. He came back to South Carolina in 1932 as a pipe fitter in Florence. In 1935 he was transferred to Columbia, where he held various positions before being promoted to his present position. Russell is a Mason and a member of an Optimist Club. He is an elder in his Presby terian Church. He is married to the former Mary Elizabeth Rogers and they have two sons, Robert and Rodney. Mrs. Floyd is certified mgr. Mrs. Aileen G. Floyd, employ ed by Newberry County Me morial Hospital, Newberry, South Carolina, was one of se ven applicants who passed the 1971 Hospital Financial Manage ment Association’s Certified Ma nager of Patient Accounts Exa mination, announced HFMA President William C. Van Lopik, CPA, FHFMA. They join 31 others who have passed the certification exami nation in the 3 years it has been in existence. Only those who have passed the exam may their names, indicating their su- use the initials CMPA after perior knowledge of manage ment of accounts receivable and credit. Luncheon, bazaar set at St. Lukes The annual luncheon and ba zaar sponsored by the women of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church will be held at the parish house on Thursday, November 11, 1971. A variety of handmade goods will be offered for sale. In cluded will be Christmas deco rations and gift items. Many useful articles made of wood will be featured. There will be pickles, relishes, and other can ned goods and homemade cook ies, pies, and cakes. Proceeds from the bazaar are used to further the work of the church. School oress day held at college 9 students from Newberry High School were among the 395 who attended the second annual High School Press Day at Newberry College last Sa turday, September 25. The program was designed for staff members and faculty advisers of high school news papers. The journalists listened to sessions conducted by Dr. Harold Hayes, professor of jour nalism, University of South Carolina; William Workman, Jr., editor of the Columbia State; Dr. Reid Montgomery, secretary-manager of the South Carolina Press Association and president of the National Coun cil of College Publications Ad visers; Bill Morgan, represen tative of the Paragon Press, Columbia; Fletcher Ferguson, news and sports editor of the Abbeville Press and Banner; Richard Haldeman, director of Public Relations t Erskine (Continued on Page 6) Meetings of the Newberry High School Booster Club are being held each week this year, according to Bill Kibler, presi dent of the organization. The club meets at Newberry High School in room 102 at 7:30 p.m. on Mondays. A feature of the weekly meet ings is a replay of the previous week’s football game on film an opportunity to study the ac tion of the game. Head Coach Mike Ware will announce the names of players of the week and thes playrs and their parents will be recog- nizd at the meeting. Kibler said the meetings are informal and will end by 9:00 p.m. He stressed that every meeting was “Ladies Night” at the Booster Club meetings. QUARTERLY CIVIL DEFENSE ALERT The quarterly Civil Defense alert will be held at 1 p.m. next Wednesday, Oct. 6. Once each three months the three- tone warning system is tested throughout the county, accord ing to Dave Morison, civil de fense director of Newberry County. R0TC activation is postooned The activation ceremony of the Newberry College Air Force for today (Thursday), has been postponed, according to Major Frederick Current, commanding officer of the Detachment. South Carolina’s Senator Strom Thurmond who was to have delivered the major ad dress at the military ceremony is unable to leave the nation’s capital because of important pending legislation which re quires his attention. Major Current stated that the activation ceremony may be re scheduled later in the fall. Senator Thurmond also plan ned to speak—along with Con gressman William Jennings Bryan Dorn—to the Newberry provisional chapter of the Lea gue of Women Voters at a 7 p.m. dinner meeting Thursday in the Kaufmann Hall Dining Room on the Newberry College campus. A spokesman for the Women’s group said, “The dinner will be held as announced. Congress man Dorn will speak on the structure of the House of Re presentatives and the legislative process; a legislative aide will represent Senator Thurmond and discuss the Senate.” Calvin Crozier meets Oct. 5 The Calvin Crozier Chapter UDC will meet at the home of Mrs. S.
