Head football coach Fred Herren, who is beginning his fourth season with the “Fighting Redskins,” has only one vacancy to fill in his defensive and offensive starting lineups. The 1971 Indians have a strong nucleus of returning upper classmen: 11 seniors, 18 juniors, and 8 sophomores; in addi tion, Herren has 24 freshmen joining the squad. • The offensive team should reach its peak this season since most of the players have been together for at least two years; Tommy Williamson, Thompson, Ga., an outstanding runner, ballhandler, and passer, will direct the attack. If he needs a break, transfer student, Steve Muirhead, Myrtle Beach, S. C., will back up the Georgian in the quarterback position. Don Garrick, an All-American candidate from Orangeburg, S. C., will lead the running backs. In 1970, Garrick scored 13 touchdowns and broke Newberry’s rushing record by galloping for 1,219 yards. Three-year letterman Jim Fulton, Blacksburg, S. C. and two other experienced backs, Chuck Beaty, Columbia, S. C. and Steve Williams, Plant City, Fla., will assist Garrick. Keith McAlister, Columbia, S. C., a two-year veteran, will hold down the flanker position with Bruce Lancaster, Simpson- ville, S. C., helping out. All-Conference contender Howdy Hays, Atlanta, Ga., will return a? the split end. Johnny Dawkins, Florence, S. C., the team’s ’-eading receiver in 1970, will get the nod for one of the tight-end slots. All-NAIA District 6 center Dexter Odom, Stone Mountain, Ga., will guide the offensive line with Shot Hart, Huntsville, Ala., backing him up in the pivot spot. Mike Bodie, North Augusta, S. C., and All-Conference tackle Frank Saccomen, Youngstown, Ohio, will be the one-two men in a group of experienced tackles and guards. They will be helped by Steve Parker, Spartanburg, S. C., and Larry Cobb, Greenville, S. C., and Tony Powell, Stone Mountain, Ga. The defensive unit ended the 1970 season as the number one squad in the conference. All-Conference Howard Merrick, Beaufort, S. C., is the number one defensive player with All- NAIA District 6 linebacker Ken Pettus, Greenville, S. C., and All-American candidate Saylor Fox, Buena Vista, Va., adding the necessary speed. The positions around the three defensive stars will be filled by Wade Nichols and Greg Hartle, both from Newberry, S. C., and Roger Armistead, Clarkston, Ga. Three lettermen are returning at defensive tackle: Marion Waters, Clinton, S. C., Andy Murtiff, Rockville, Md., and Dur- wood Yates, Silver Springs, Md. The two middle guards are Buzz Brown, Decatur, Ga., and Rick Sargent, Rome, Ga. Pettus and Mark Davis, Decatur, Ga., will act as the pace makers for the linebacker core with relief coming from Phil Worthington, Rome, Ga. The defensive secondary is the only area where the starting position is still vacant. Two lettermen, Butch Jernigan, Evans, Ga., and Tim Bradshaw, Irmo, S. C., are the major contenders for the slot.
