Forest fire losses lower During May 230 w i 1 d f i r e s burned 926 acres of woodland in South Carolina, a sharp drop from April when 1,385 wildfires burned 10,411 acres of wood land, said State Forester John R. Tiller. May forest fire losses were also lower than in May 1970 when 336 wildfires burned 1,500 acres, according to S.C. State Commission of Forestry records. Incendiary, or “woods arson” type fires accounted for 23 per cent of the May fires; care less smokers caused 21 percent; and careless debris burning caused 20 percent. In the past 11 months 5,247 wildfires have burned 34,139 acres of woodland in the state. This was 699 more fires and 9,458 more acres than burned in the comparable 11-month pe riod a year ago. In May nine convictions were obtained in ten cases prosecutr ed for violations of state forest fire laws. State Forester Tiller said that South Carolina has a year ’round forest fire season. He reminded vacationers and all South Carolinians to remember to practice Smokey Bear's fo rest fire prevention rules to help keep South Carolina's fo rests green and growing. John C. Taylor rites Monday John Carroll Taylor, 47, of Atlanta, Ga., died suddenly Sa turday afternoon in Atlanta. Mr. Taylor was born and reared at Prosperity in New berry County and was the son of J. W. Taylor Jr. and Mrs. Eva Mae Boozer Taylor. He was connected with Muses Men's Clothiers for a number of years and for the past 11 years he had made his home in Atlanta and was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church of Atlanta. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Taylor Jr., Prosperity; one brother, Joseph V. Taylor, Prosperity; one sis ter, Mrs. Blanche T. Lester, Prosperity, and the following nephews and niece, Mr. and Mrs. Derrill Taylor and Bobby Taylor. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 5 o’clock from St. Luke’s Lutheran Church with Rev. J. Hilton Roof and Rev. David Dunngeron con ducting the service. Interment was in St. Lukes Lutheran Church Cemetery. Mrs. Turner dies in Ind. An Anderson, Ind., resident since 1947, Mrs. Mildred Turn er, 49, died Monday morning, June 7 at St. John’s Hospital after an extended illness. She was born in Newberry, daughter of Walter and Laberta Long Davenport. Mrs. Turner moved to An derson from Indian Head, Md., and was employed at RCA in Indianapolis in the electronics division. She was married to William J. Turner, who died in 1970. Surviving are her mother, La berta Davenport. Newberry; a son, Michael K. Turner, An derson, a stepdaughter, Jackie Beightler, Champaign, 111.; two brothers, Henley Daven port, Newberry, and John Da venport, of Charleston; and one step-grandson; also, three aunts, Mrs. D. C. Teague of Columbia, Mrs. V. C. Elliott of Charleston, Mrs. C. C. Dun can Sr. of Newberry; one uncle, J. II. Davenport of North Au gusta, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were con ducted at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in Rozelle Funeral Home by Rev. Thomas Alston. Interment was in the Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. W. L. Griffin died Saturday Mrs. Nellie Richardson Grif fin. 79, of Newberry, widow of William L. Griffin, died Satur day in Spartanburg. Surviving are two granddaugh ters and five great-grandchil dren. Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday. MrsTP.Mills died Sunday Mrs. Helen Lake Mills, 66. wife of Thomas Pinckney Mills of Rt. 2, Prosperity, died Sun day. A native of Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Kirk David and Angie Boland Lake. Surviving also are a daugh ter, Mrs. Mellwood “Dorothy” Coleman of Saluda; two sons, Fred T. Mills of Saluda and George L. Mills of Prosperity; a sister, Miss Grace Lake of Columbia; five brothers, Cur tis and Grover Lake of Co lumbia, Herman and Harvey Lake of Prosperity and Charles Lake of Newberry; and 10 grandchildren. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Corinth Lu theran Church, Saluda. Burial will be in the church cemetery. James R. Fake died Saturday James Robert (Bob) Lake, 92, of Jolly Street Road, died early Saturday morning at a Columbia hospital. Born in New berry County, he was a son of the late Miles Duckett and Mis souri Senn Lake. He was a re tired farmer and a member of Enoree Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Lu cia DeHihns Lake; two sons, Robert Harold Lake of New berry, and Vernon A. Lake of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Tommie Bouknight of Newberry, Mrs. Pearl Stubbs of Huntsville,, Ala., and Mrs. Bessie Powell of Greenville; a brother, Sam Lake of Chester field. and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock from Enoree Baptist Church with Rev. Wilkes Skinner and Rev. C. B. Atkinson conducting the service. Interment was in the church cemetery. Jeff Singley, Sr. service Sunday Jeff I. Singley Sr., 58, died suddenly Saturday morning at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Born in Newberry County, he was a son of the late Jefferson and Dora Liv ingston Singley. Mr. Singley was a retired employee of New berry Mills, a member of Ma yer Memorial Lutheran Church, and a veteran of W.W. II. Surviving are his wife, Versa Bishop Singley; a son, Jeff I. Singley Jr. of Newberry; a daughter, Mrs. Kay Marsh of Augusta, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Kyzer of Newberry and Mrs. Minnie McCartha of Pros perity; a brother, Earl Singley of Newberry; also two grand children. Funeral services were held at 5:30 p.m. Sunday from Mc- Swain Funeral Home with Rev. John Koch, Rev. Elbert John son, and Rev. Ralph Rhyne conducting the service. Burial was in Newberry Memorial Gar dens. Willie Suber rites Thursday Willie J. Suber, 89, of Rt. 2, Pomaria, died Wednesday at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital after a lingering ill ness. Mr. Suber was born in Po maria, the son of the late Wil liam Frank and Nancy Wicker Suber. He was a retired dairy farmer and a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, was active in his church as long as health permitted, having served on the St. Matthews Lu theran Church Council and was Sunday School Superintendent for a number of years. He is survived by two sons, Jacob Suber and Thomas O. Suber, both of Pomaria; two step-sons, Lovick P. Miller and Berley L. Miller, both of Whit mire; five daughters, Mrs. Tho mas Smith and Mrs. Mark Smith, both of Newberry, Mrs. Pat Long and Mrs. Harvey Berley, both of Pomaria, and Mrs. Dan Sandel of Columbia; two step-daughters, Mrs. H. B. Ale wine of Rock Hill and Mrs. James C. Fulmer of Columbia; one sister, Mrs. Laura Parrott of Newberry; and 14 grandchil dren. Funeral services were con ducted at 4 p.m. Thursday at Bethelem Lutheran Church by Rev. Allan Sellman, Rev. El- ford Roof and Rev. Charles Shealy. Interment was in the church cemetery.
