YOU COULD SAVE ONE LIFE WITH ONE WORD.. WOULD YOU? K one word in the old constitution can be changed this November 3, it could very well mean life for one of your loved ones later. Presently the constitution limits Newberry County's bonding indebtedness percentage. When the constitution was written back in 1895, it was adequate for its time but with Newberry's growth, industry, and a difference in the value of the dollar we must consider a change. The present hospital consists of the original building from 1925 with additions of wings on the sides and behind. This has created a traffic situation that can not be remedied. Patients must wart for lab and X-ray tests in narrow corridors with service personnel, nurses, doctors and even visitors moving up and down these corridors. One elevator must be utilized for emergencies, food distribution, movement of patients from floor to floor and to the operating room, cleaning supplies and service personnel, professional staff as well as visitors. And all of this is funneled through one hallway opening into the lobby. We must consider a change. Your help is needed. Please vote YES for the hospital referendum when you have the opportunity on November 3. The one word change is the main step towards getting a new hospital. A hospital planned for growth...with large airy halls...sanitary conditions prevailing throughout...large sun lit patients' rooms...laboratories and operating rooms sparkling with the latest in equipment...and an even more competent staff of doctors and nurses, because these professionals will come to Newberry to work in the new hospital. YOU COULD BE A LIFESAVER NOV. 3 THIS IS NOT A TAX INCREASE Shall Section 5, Article X, of the Constitution of this state be amended so as to permit Newberry County to incur bonded indebtedness up to thirty per cent o* the assessed value of the taxable property therein for the purpose of providing public hospital facilities jnd to exclude such indebtedness from the limitation of aggregate indebtedness upon any municipality or political subdivision of the county or state wholly covering or partially extending over the territory of the county? - In favor of the amendment □ Opposed to the amendment □ REFERENDUM ON GREEN SHEET A principal diagnostic tool of any hospital is a well equipped laboratory. Testing results from modern equipment by qualified personnel in a minimum amount of time may be the difference between quick recovery and prolonged illness. Newberry Hospital personnel are qualified but... This may very well be your "hospital room" if you happen to be admitted during a crowded period. One third of the time patients must be put in the corridors because of lack of' proper bed space. Are you satisfied with these conditons? The need to be carried from the second floor of the hospital, where a baby is delivered, down the corridors pest service personnel and even visitors to the first floor nursery, is not a very sanitary condition, but one that is made necessary by our traffic patterns in the present inefficient hospital system. Cerebral hemorrhage, cardiac arrest, or any illness that reaches a critical point, should have intensive care. It could very well be the difference between life or death. Newberry Hospital has NO intensive care unit. The Newberry Sun, Newberry, S. C., Thursday, Oct. 29, 1970—PAGE 9
