Mobile home parks problem There are now more than 500 mobile home parks in South Carolina and at least a dozen of them have grown to a popu lation of over 1,000 persons. The State Board of Health today said that sanitation in some of them is not up-to-par and that keeping them sanitary has be come a big problem. Health department sanitarians inspect all mobile home parks and before one can be licensed, it must meet regulations for the number of trailers it will accommodate. But according to State Health Officer Dr. E. Ken neth Aycock, “The park often grows much faster than the owner anticipated and he takes in adjacent lands for more homes. “Water and sewage facilities must then be enlarged and some owners are tardy in do ing this. The results are water that is of a poor quality and septic tanks that overflow caus ing health problems. “Oftentimes little boys play in open spaces near the trailers where there is seepage from overflowing septic tanks,” Dr. Aycock said. “If one of the boys picks up a ball that has rolled on the ground, he can get some of this seepage on his hands. Then if he eats an apple or candy without washing his hands, he may eat some of the sewage also. “Though he may not become critically ill, chances are he may get an upset stomach or roundworms (ascaris), or deve lop some other illness. A few years ago he could easily have contracted typhoid fever,” com mented Dr. Aycock. Dr. Aycock said that a mo bile home park with 64 trailers along the coast desperately has need of a larger oxidation pond for its sewage and that last winter a 12-unit park in the Pied mont had broken sewage lines for several days. The Pap test is a simple way to detect one of the leading kinds — can cer of the cervix. Out of 12,500 women tested in the Pee Dee area of South Carolina, 138 sus picious cases and 27 positive ones have been found. “Since cancer is a matter of life and death, it is very impor tant that we find every possible case,” said Dr. William C. Ma- rett of the State Board of Health. Dr. Marett, chief of the Bu reau of Adult Health Services, said that more than 200 S. C. women died from cancer of the cervix in 1969. “Most of these deaths could have been pre vented if each woman had taken time for a yearly examination. Dr. Marett pointed out that with one exception all of the cancers found by the Pee Dee Project were in the early stage and the women have been restored to good health. “About 750 cases develop in the State each year, but the Pap test will detect the disease in the early stage before any symp toms develop. The test is quick, simple, and painless and every woman should have one at least once a year.” How can a Pap test be ar ranged? By contacting your doctor or, if you live in Darling- County, check with the health department. Dr. Marett explained that the Board of Health sponsors the Tri—County Screening Project and added, “I wish we had a si milar project to cover the en tire state.” The Pee Dee project operates free clinics in the county health departments and in several of the larger industries. Most of the laboratory tests are run by the McLeod Infirmary in Flo rence. A spokesman for the Infirmary reports that the number of Pap tests sent in by private physi cians for their patients has in creased by a larger percentage than normal since the project began. In 1969 the number of Paps run by the lab increased 51 percent. Financed with federal funds through the South Carolina Reg ional Medical Program, the Tri cently applied for a permit to open a park with eight trailers. When the sanitarian inspected it, he found the electrical sup ply lines on the ground. The man had not provided garbage can racks for each trailer and the sewage connections were not water-tight. The permit was withheld until the owner cor rected the violations. With many of the parks now including swimming pools for the community, another prob lem is created in keeping the pools clean enough for swim ming. Every pool is checked once a week by Board of Health inspectors and when the water is not found safe, the pool is closed. “While most park operators try to follow all the rules, many parks are overcrowded and con sequently their sewage disposal systems are overloaded,” the health officer commented Dr. Aycock said anyone plan ning to open a mobile home park should first contact the county health department in order to avoid costly expenses. County Project has been in op eration since August 1968. Cancer society names officers The annual meeting of the Newberry County Cancer Soc iety was held on August 3rd at Newberry Inn.
