F. Busby "it should offer some thing for everyone interested in the swine industry." Registration, commercial ex hibits and pork snacks will be on the agenda from 8:30 a.m. to 10 when the program starts. The keynote address comes at 10:10 by David H. Stroud, presi dent of the National Livestock and Meat Board of Chicago. "Following his address will be another highlight, a panel pre sentation representing all seg ments of the industry from pro ducer to retailer." says Busby. Lunch will be from 1 to 2 p.m. m the Redwood Cafeteria, with Bov Robert F. McNair the speaker. There's also an interesting af ternoon program lined up. Bus by says, with these speakers and topics: "Financing Pork Production in the Seventies", Robert A. Darr. president of the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank and Federal Land Bank. Columbia. New Facts and Figures on the Fconomies of Production and Marketing of South Caro lina Pork". Dr. W. J. Lanham. head of the Department of Agri cultural Economics and Rural Sociology. Clemson University. And. "The Job Ahead: To Realize Our Potential". Dr VV.T. O'Dell, director of the Ciemson Extension Service. Swine production has been one of the fastest-growing farm en terprises in S. C recently, and authorities feel there is still room for expansion if under taken on "a sound basis". "Statewide." says Busby, “our cash receipts for swine totaled over $2;i million in 1969. This was up some $6 million from 1968. and production is still growing. In Newberry County, he says, growth has been rather mod erate. "We've had some expan sion by established producers, and some new facilities put in by people just getting into it." Progress in the county also is reflected in swine production income, totaling $220,890 in 1959 according to Busby, and hitting approximately one-half million for 1969. "New technology in product ion. the automated systems, and the upgrading of swine stock are bringing a new look and new opportunity to the field." he said. He feels that growers in S.C., with the climate, corn-growing possibilities, and other favorable factors are in a good position to compete. He puts it this way: "Swine production has a lot in his favor. It will fit in with almost any type farming opera tion. We can grow the feed. Lim ited acreage is needed, and in this state we aren’t meeting re tail demands. We’re still im porting pork. "There is some evidence that the high markets of the past couple of years are cooling, but the potential should be there. "Somebody’a going to be sell ing. If a man goes into pork production on a sound basis, so that he can produce at max imum efficiency and market ec onomically, he ought to be able to meet the competition and make some money."
