S.WDKRS ALL RIGHT, YOUTH- (The following is a continua tion of the article written by John PM Pearce, a member of the editorial staff of The Cour ier-Journal in Louisville. Ky Mr. Pearce is enumerating for the "disillusioned'' younger generation a feu of the accom plishments of their predecess ors: i By John Ed Pearce We have given you a health ier world than we found. You no longer need fear epidemics of flu. typhus, diphtheria, small pox. scarlet fever. We have banished the nightmare of polio We are closing TB wards daily. Rickets and worms are rare. Childbirth is no longer feared. Improving safety laws protect the health of mine and factory workers. We are beginning to make startling progress in tran splants, and are beating at the ignorance that surrounds can cer We have pushed the bound aries of knowledge into the gene and out into space We have thrown open the door of museums and concert halls where once only the rich ent ered. We have given you anti biotics, television, air condition ing and transistors We have made a start, late, but a start, toward healing the scars left on our earth in our plunge across the continent We are writing new meaning into con servation. trying to stop the ero sion of our soil, the pollution of air and water, setting aside land for public enjoyment, and learning to work with the forces of nature to preserve threaten ed life forms. It is in the field of social relationships that we, like all before us, have fallen shortest of the goal. We have developed weapons that can end all life i do not lament this; nuclear power can be made to serve man as well as destroy him, and the questioning mind cannot be asked to draw back from knowledge because it may prove dangerous.) But even with the threat of annihilation hang ing over us we have not found an alternative to war Perhaps you can perfect the social me chanism so that ail men may. without the threat of force, pur sue their course, m which we will no longer need laws or pol ice to enforce them, or armies to prevent men of one belief from trespassing against others, though the violence with which >ou protest violence justifies lit tie hope that you will You must. learn to hate injustK ;e w ithout hating the unjust, to hi ite w ar without h atmg those !
