We have given you a health
ier world than we found. You
no longer need fear epidemics
of flu. typhus, diphtheria, small
pox. scarlet fever. We have
banished the nightmare of polio
We are closing TB wards daily.
Rickets and worms are rare.
Childbirth is no longer feared.
Improving safety laws protect
the health of mine and factory
workers. We are beginning to
make startling progress in tran
splants, and are beating at the
ignorance that surrounds can
cer We have pushed the bound
aries of knowledge into the gene
and out into space
We have thrown open the door
of museums and concert halls
where once only the rich ent
ered. We have given you anti
biotics, television, air condition
ing and transistors We have
made a start, late, but a start,
toward healing the scars left
on our earth in our plunge
across the continent We are
writing new meaning into con
servation. trying to stop the ero
sion of our soil, the pollution
of air and water, setting aside
land for public enjoyment, and
learning to work with the forces
of nature to preserve threaten
ed life forms.
It is in the field of social
relationships that we, like all
before us, have fallen shortest
of the goal. We have developed
weapons that can end all life
i do not lament this; nuclear
power can be made to serve
man as well as destroy him,
and the questioning mind cannot
be asked to draw back from
knowledge because it may
prove dangerous.) But even with
the threat of annihilation hang
ing over us we have not found
an alternative to war Perhaps
you can perfect the social me
chanism so that ail men may.

for holidays
The Newberry College cam
pus takes on a deserted look
this week as students and fac
ulty finish taking or giving final
examinations and make* their
plans for the Christmas holi
days.
College dormitories close at

Children die
in house fire
Two small children suffocated
here early Tuesday morning
when a fire broke out in their
home, according to Newberry
County Coroner George R. Sum
mer.
The coroner identified the vic
tims as Patricia Louise Boyd,
3, and Heyward Boyd. Jr.. 2.
The parents. Mr. and Mrs. Hey
ward Boyd, had gone to work
when the fire occurred.
Larry Hawkins, 16, a cousin,
was asleep in the house, and
was awakened by the screams
of 15-month-old James Vincent
Boyd. The coroner said Hawkins
and the babv escaped unharm
ed
Hawkins told the coroner he
thought the other two children
had escaped, since they were
not in their beds and did not
answer calls The fire broke
out about 6:30 a m., the coroner
said.
He said the bodies were found
under the bed as firemen were
putting out the blaze. The coro
ner said the fire appeared to
have started from an old chim
ney in the kitchen.
No inquest is planned.

AT AVELEIGH
There will be a Christmas
Carol Service along with the Joy
Gift and Candlelighting service
at Aveleigh Presbyterian Church
at 7:30 o'clock Sunday evening,
December 21. The public is

Mayor Clarence A. Shealy sigrns a proclamation desig
nating the week of December 22-27 as U. S. Air Force
Nurses Corps Week in Newberry, as his sister, Lt. Col.
Irene Shealy, and the Air Force Nurses Corps recruiter
from Columbia look on. Col. Shealy, who is now on leave
and will next be on duty in Vietnam, accepted an Honor
ary Citizenship Certificate on behalf of Col. Ann Hoe-
fly, commanding officer of the USAF Nurse Corps.
The Certificate stated: “In appreciation for outstand
ing leadership and dedicated service to country, be it
hereby known to all that Col. Ann Hoefly, US Ah’ 1 Nurses
Corps, has on this 16th day of December 1060 been made
an Honorary Citizen of the City of Newberry, State of
South Carolina and in recognition thereof has been pre
