The Bridegroom-elect is the son of Mrs. Curtis Vaedry Hill and the late Mr. Hill of Green ville. The bride-elect, a 1968 graduate of Greenville Gen eral Hospital School of Nursing, is now employed as a Staff Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Greenville Gen eral Hospital. The bridegroom-elect will graduate with a degree in Industrial Education from Clemson in May 1970. The wedding will take place on October 4, 1969 in the Lu theran Church of the Redeemer, Newberry, S. C. No for mal invitations are being sent in Newberry County. Friends and relatives are invited to attend the ceremony and reception. Williams signs grant in aid Steve Williams, a versatile athlete from Plant City, Flor ida, has signed a football grant- in-aid to attend Newberry Col lege. Newberry Assistant Coach Steve Robertson said Williams is outstanding on both defense and offense. At Plant City High he played defensive end and al so starred as a running and blocking back. He also partici pated in basketball, baseball and track. A six-footer, he weighs 195 pounds and does 100 yards in 10.5 seconds. “He's got the size, the speed, and the spirit”, Rob ertson observed. Williams became a two-way regular as a high school sopho more. and rushed for 578 yards as a junior halfback. Last fall he played fullback on offense and stood out as a blocker and tough-yardage man. earning all county honors. CADET CHANDLER ON DEAN'S LIST CHARLESTON—Citadel Cadet Lambert Ed Chandler, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. Edward Chand ler, Route 1, achieved academ ic distinction by winning a place on the military college’s Dean’s List for the semester ending on May 31, 1969. Brig. Gen. W. E. Anderson, academic dean, announced the winners. He praised the students who attained Dean’s List status and said, “Achievement of a place on the Dean’s List indi cates strong motivation to excel scholastically.” Dean’s List students must have a grade point ratio of at least 3.0, which is the equiva lent of all B’s. Cadets who are receiving their first Dean’s List award will be presented the medal and a bar signifying that it is an initial awaru. Others will receive an appropriate bar to indicate the number of times their name has appeared on the Dean’s List. Cadet Chandler, a rising sen ior at the military college, is majoring in mathematics and is enrolled in the Army ROTC program. REPRESENTS DISTRICT AT CONFERENCE R. The City reserves the right to reject any and all bids. entary school principals in Lau rens County School District 56, represented that district at the 4th Southwide Conference of the Elementary Division, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, at Biloxi, Miss., July 20-23. Joanna, the school of which Mr. Sanders is principal, has already been accredited by the Southern Association. Martha Dendy and Midway Schools, of which Messrs. Hunter and Knig hton are principals, expect ac creditation in December at the annual meeting of the Southern Association in Dallas, Texas. Former city resident dies Dr. James Edwin Stokes, 80, retired druggist, died Saturday in an Orangeburg hospital. Funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Monday in Sunnyside Cemetery. He was born in Batesburg, a son of the late Rev. George E. and T. Elwell Stokes, and lived in Newberry for many years. Surviving are a son, James E. Stokes, Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Mrs. A. B. Phe- gen (Clara Elwell) of New York City; a brother, Dr. William Stokes of Hinton, W. Va.; and a sister, Mrs. Annie S. Latta of Orangeburg. Mrs. Floyd’s brother dies William Calvin Winn died on July 27 at the VA Hospital in Forest Hills Division, Augusta, Georgia. He \ as a resident of Due West, and due to declining of health he had retired as sani tation officer of the Abbeville County Health Department two years ago. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the European theatre. Among his survivors is a sis ter, Mrs. Louis C. (Jane) Floyd of this city.
