Not James W. Ingram, Jr., who just received his bachelor of arts degree from Newberry College. Jimmy built a pipe organ last semester. He built it at his home in Lexington on weekends, mostly out of makeshift materials in cluding an old blacksmith’s blower and other salvaged parts. He was majoring in music at Newberry, but making th< pipe organ wasn’t even part of his music studies. It was a special project in an education depart ment course in audio-visual me thods. He decided to prepare an audio-visual demonstration o f how a pipe organ works, and he needed a portable pipe or gan. So he built one. He got an “A” in the course. The job took 400 man-hours, or man-and-woman hours. His mother and father helped which was all right with the professor, Dr. James F. Cummings. The senior Ingram, who is athletic director at Lexington High, and a former shop instructor, did a lot of the cabinet work. Jimmy designed the instru ment and assembled it. Now he has probably the only genuine pipe organ in the world with four sets of pipes and only one octave of keys. All right, so it isn’t a con cert organ. Its four ranks of pipes (or part-ranks) were enough for Jimmy’s purpose. With its miniature console of 13 keys, one stop tablet and two pre sets, he could produce all of a full-sized organ’s basic tones, singly or in combination. When he wasn’t working on the organ, he was preparing other parts of his classroom de monstration. His illustrated talk grew to include 50 color slides of various pipe organ installa tions. He also made a tape re cording of organ tones at New berry’s Redeemer Lutheran Church, where Jimmy’s organ and piano instructor, Darr Wise presides at the console. The color slides depicting the mechanisms of big organs were made at Redeemer,in the col lege chapel, at Central Metho dist and St. Luke’s Enisconal churches in Newberry, and at St. Stephen’s Lutheran, Jimmy’s home church in Lexington. Jimmy’s one-octave organ is strictly portable, he says. He can knock it down and move it anywhere for a demonstration. Putting it together again in front of the audience is part of the act. The construction job took im agination. The Ingrams used spruce pine for the wind chest, and made a bellows out of pine and fine Cabretta leather. The 13 keys are hand-cut, and cov ered with ivory salvaged from an old piano. Jimmy borrowed the pipes from another organ he owns, a 10-rank instrument which was once in St . John’s Methodist Church in Batesburg. It’s any thing but portable, and he stores it at home because he hasn’t found room to install it yet. The borrowed pipes encom pass all four basic “families” of pipe organ tones: diapson, reeds and oboe, flutes and cel este-strings. Jimmy would be glad to put on audio-v i s u a 1 demonstrat ion for interested groups, but not just now. He got his diploma June 1 and headed straight for six month of active duty with the National Guard. When he gets back, there’s a job waiting at Case Brothers House of Music in Spartanburg. He’ll be staff organist there, demonstrating electronic organs and assisting with the “tonal finishing” of new organ install ations. If there’s room at the House of Music, he’d like to set up his one-octave pipe organ and de monstrate it for customers. Tta County Agents Column EVERYONE LEARN The Board of Directors of the National Safety Council has giv en careful consideration to the problem of drowning. There are still too many people who do not know how to take care of themselves in the water. At a recent meeting of the Board it was decided to conduct a council-wide “Everyone Learn to Swim” program—the pro gram is specific and life sav ing. Find the children and young adults who do not know how to swim. Help them to get instruction from agencies and organizations in this field—Red Cross chap ters, “Y’s”, Schools, Summer Camps. The problem is, one out of fifteen fatal accidents is drown ing; drowning is the fourth lead ing type of fatal accident; of those who drown 86 percent are male and two-thirds are more than fourteen years old. Almost two-thirds were not swimming at the time of the accident. They fell in the water and other mis cellaneous accidents on the wa ter. Almost half the people who drown were alone at the time the accident occurred. What can one do about drown- ings? Look for the people who don’t know how to swim, the ones who never go to camp or the ones usually who never learn to swim; enroll in swim ming class; and take every op portunity to learn to be a bet ter swimmer. Points to stress in a safety program are: everyone should learn to swim; practice staying afloat with clothes one; swim only where there are lifeguards; swim with others, never alone; learn how to give mouth-to- mouth respiration. This is one of the most effective ways to help revive a person. Boaters who can't swim should wear life preservers. These are all good points to remember and work on for this summer. If you have your own private swimming pool, fence it in, put a lock on the gate, and do not allow your neighbors, children or other friends to go in the pool without one of their parents being with them. This can save everyone lots of trou ble. Just a little experience in the water is not enough. People need to learn to swim well enough to take care of them selves in the water in an emer gency. Let’s make this summer a safe one. LET CATTLE CONTROL FLIES Throughout South Carolina the blood-thirsty horn fly takes its toll f rom the cattleman during the warmer seasons of the year. This fly can cost up to one-half pound of grain per day. An easy method that will give positive control of the horn fly and fair control of the face fly is the self-applicatory device known as the dust bag. Even though data are lacking, some cooperators who have participa ted in dust bag trials have re ported that since they began us ing the bags, their cattle have remained free of lice and cattle grubs. To be successful, a self-treat ing dusting device must b e rather inexpensive and easily constructed, require minimum maintenance, be situated so the cattle will use it regularly, be supported by “foolproof” de vices that will hold the bags in the correct position and last as long as the bag will contain dust and be easily detached for mov ing and filling. Any shelter which is located in the proper place and which will give the bags some degree of protection from the weather will be suitable. Walkways in barns or sheds, overhangs of eaves, existing shelters, etc. can be used. One of the simplest is to attach a two by four inch or larger timber horizontally four or five feet above ground. Attach a vertical board so that a small doorway approximately four feet wide is formed. Close up the rest of the area with horizontally attached scrap lum ber. Attach hooks to hold two dust bags. Each dust bag consists of two burlap sacks one inside the oth er. Do not use bags previously used for feed containers. Space the hooks so that the bags hang four inches apart. A gap between the bags is neces sary so that the cattle can see between them. Consistent fly control will be obtained when the station is placed in an area where the cat tle are forced to pass through it at least once each day or not less than once every two days. Consistent control can be ob tained also when units serve as doorways to salt and mineral enclosures, as gateways be tween pastures, or in areas where animals pass through to obtain water. Nonincentive units placed in cattle-loafing areas will not give consistent control. Enclosures do not have to be elaborate. Barbed wire enclos ures are effective. Each hag should contain ten pounds or less of the insectici dal dust. In some instances five pounds of dust will be sufficient, but bags will have to be filled more often. The bags last long er when they contain smaller amounts of dust. One dusting station (with two bags) should be used for 50 or fewer head of cattle. Dusts to use: The following dust formulations are approved and recommended for use in dust bags: Beef and Dairy Cattle: Dust containing 0.75 percent of Py thrin plus 0.2 percent of MGK- 264 synergist plus 0.2 percent of MGK-326 repellent; or dust containing 3 percent of Ciodrin; or dust containing 5 percent of Co-Ral (coumaphos). Note: for lactation dairy cows, suspend in the lane where they LEAVE the milking bam. Hang so that the bottom of the sacks hang four to six inches below the top line of the cattle. Beef Cattle Only: Dust con taining 2 percent of DDT plus 2 percent of methoxychlor; or dust containing 10 percent of methoxychlor.
