Three DAR pins, one high school history medal, two junior citizenship medals and three essay awards were con tributed. At the close of the meeting, the hostesses served delicious refreshments consisting of sandwiches, brownies, cheese wafers and fruit punch. Students given litter sticks Last week the students in The Newberry Academy wel comed Mrs. Richard L. Baker as Chairman of the Newberry County Beautification Com mission. President James C. Kinard presented her to each fcrade and told briefly about the many awards which had been won under Mrs. Baker’s efficient leadership. She gave each grade a tri centennial stick and explained its use in keeping the grounds free of litter. In her usual gracious manner she spoke of the aims of the beautification program. She referred also to the tricentennial celebration in which she said she knew the students would be glad to share. Meet Friday The Board of Directors of the Newberry Academy and President Kinard cordially in vite all the parents of stud ents now enrolled and those attending for the first time next year to the last meeting of the session. This will be held in the aud itorium at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 17. A group of students will present a brief program. Plans for the next session will be outlined and some im portant announcements will be made. The meeting should not last more than an hour. DAR officers give reports The last meeting of the year of the Jasper Chapter, DAR, was held May 10 at the home of Miss Julia Kibler. Associate hostesses were Dr. Lillian Kib ler, Mrs. J. J. Chappell, Mrs. C. M. Smith and Mrs. J. A. Long. Mrs. F. Scott Elliott Sr., re gent, presided over the meet ing. MisS Hattie Belle T ester and Mrs. Mary Frances Finney conducted the opening ritual. Mrs. J. J. Chappell read t h e President General’s Letter which summarized some of the accomplishments of her Dia mond Jubilee administration Miss Margaret Paysinger and Mrs. Ralph B. Baker presented some facts on National Defense. M iss Paysinger brought out that "foreign aid sent abroad in dollar credits is the principal cause of the balance of payment deficits. Dollars in foreign hands are redeemable in gold from our gold reserves. Noth ing is more important than to restore confidence in the dol lar.” Mrs. Baker read part of an article on "Where Do We Stand Today?” The chapter made a contribution to the Dol lars for Defense Fund. Mrs. Harry Epting was elect ed recording secretary. Mrs. R. E. Hanna, Miss Hattie Belle Lester and Miss Margaret Pay singer were elected to serve on the nominating committee for 1968-70. Mrs. James H. Abrams of Whitmire has received her membership in the chapter. Officers and committee chair men gave their annual reports showing that much 'work had been accomplished. The regent read her report which will be be published in the State So ciety’s Yearbook. Five new members were added during the year. The Chapter Yearbook won a blue ribbon at the State DAR Congress.
