C., Thursday, January 4, 1968 Golden Age Fellowship meets The December meeting of the Golden Age Fellowship was held at the Social Hall of the Lutheran Church of the Re deemer on the 20th at 3 p.m. The hall was beautifully dec orated with holly wreaths at the door and arrangements of green branches with red ber ries throughout the rooms, and a Christmas tree with many stars. Miss Margaret Paysinger, president of the Lutheran Church Women, opened the meeting with appropriate scrip ture for a Christmas program, and then read a prayer poem, “The Meaning of Christmas.y Several interesting games were played after which each person received a prize of candy canes. With Mrs. Fred Hayes at the piano, the group sang Christ mas carols, after which Miss Paysinger read a Christmas legend, “The Lost Melody” by Norman Vincent Peale. A committee of LCW served delicious refreshments: several kinds of sandwiches, decorated cookies and coffee - flavored punch. The group formed a circle, Mrs. Hartley thanked the hos tesses and the group sang one verse of “Blest Be The Tie That Binds.” Twenty-four members and two visitors were present. Mrs. Long’s mother dies Mrs. Mary Shealy, 85, of Chapin, mother of Mrs. Curtis Long of Prosperity, died Sat urday in Newberry County Memorial hospital. Federal grant approved for park projects COLUMBIA. — A pair of recreational projects in the City of Newberry has been ap proved for a total of $115,031.50 in federal assistance through the Land and Water Conserva tion Fund, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism announced today. Approved for the federal as sistance are the Marion Davis and Wise Street Park projects. In the Marion Davis project, reimbursement was requested for the acquisition of a 12.3 acre tract of land adjacent to the Highway 121 by-pass and its development. The develop ment will include croquet courts, shuffle board courts, horseshoe pits, a tot lot that will include swings, slides, a “jungle gym,” paved skate run, a 2.7 acre lake with boating facilities, trails picnic area and off-street park ing. The Wise Street project re quests reimbursement for the acquisition of an 8.3 acre site and its development. Upon com pletion, the park will contain a croquet court, multi-purpose courts, horseshoe pits, picnic tables, picnic shelter with fire place, archery range, little league baseball field, tot lot, combination football-softball field, maintenance building and off-street parking. The city of Newberry has already acquired the land for the projects. The federal funds are for partial payment of the land and its development. Ap proved for the Wise Street project was $61,582 while $53,- 449.50 was approved for the Marion Davis project. The fed eral funds represent half of the total cost of the projects. The Land and Water Conser vation Fund Program is a grants-in-aid program admin istered through the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation of the Department of the Interior that assists state and local agencies in meeting present and future outdoor recreation demands and needs. tary at Hughes Aircraft and also held a similar position at North American Aviation. Tourist Center manager named COLUMBIA. — A manager and hostesses for South Caro- linas first tourist welcome cen ter have been selected, it was announced today by the De partment of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Paul I. Cook, director of the Travel Division, said, “We feel we have been fortunate in the type of people we were able to secure for the operation of South Carolina’s first tourist welcome centeer. There was a large number of qualified ap plicants, which made it very difficult for us to make the final selection. We are confid ent the young women who have been selected for these import ant positions will reflect great credit upon the state and will do an excellent job of telling tourists of the advantages of vacationing in South Carolina.” Named to manage the first center is Irene Lucy Valcarcel of Myrtle Beach. The four hos tesses are Suzanne Foster of Georgetown, Freda Jane Hucks of Conway, Saundra Lavonne Taylor of Warrenville and Eva Kathleen (Kitty) Strickland of Myrtle Beach. Mrs. Valcarcel was born at McColl, but lived in California for a number of years. She at tended Orange Coast College at Fullerton, Calif, for two years and Los Angeles school of stenotype for six months. A graduate of Waccamaw High School at Ash, N.
