Problem: Catch Op With The Sun The sun in the morning sky is much more important to man than the signal that a new day has begun. Since man first began marking time, the sun has always posed a problem. Leap years in our present Gre gorian calendar are necessita ted by the fact the solar year is longer than the calendar year. The problem is not new. Sometime in the seventh cen tury B. C., Numa Pompilius instituted the Roman calendar. Although it was revised several times, by the reign of Julius Ceasar, the Roman calendar was some two months behind the sun. Ceasar put his best minds to work on a new calendar. Thev The City Barber Shop 1416 MAIN STREET NEWBERRY came up with a better method of keeping up, but could not decide what to do about the two months needed to actually catch up with the sun. They solved the problem by inserting two additional months between the months of November and De cember, making the then-cur rent year, which we now refer to as 46 B. C., the longest year in history — a total of 445 days. What is the best gift for a child? Where many parents are concerned, the "best gift” is the most expensive one they can afford. Maybe it is the bicycle, because dad ’'didn’t have one when I was young. ” Maybe it is a new ora used car for jun ior or sister to ’’run around in. ” The best gift for the very young is something to enjoy. Youngsters aren’t impressed with price tags. They don’t Care whether a gift costs $49.50 or $4.95. It must amuse them, else they are likely to toss it aside and play with the pots and pans in the kitchen. The plain truth is that, at Christmastime, too many par ents have a tendency to try to make up for all the things they haven't done for their children by giving them expensive ma terial possessions. These are not always the best gifts. Rather than expen sive gifts, children just might appreciate some of the intangi ble gifts parents used to give. Time spent together, at play, at learning a new skill ora new game. A bit of togetherness, doing things as a family group. A helping hand, wheth er with a job that needs doing, or a problem that needs solving. A bit of family togetherness — isn't this, perhaps, the best gift of all?
