c by the way .. . By DORIS A. SANDERS THE NEW BROOM I would liko to have attend ed the first regular meeting of the new city council Tuesday night but since I was a-bed with ’flu I had to be content to hear it VIA WKDK. I found it very amusing. This council seems to feel it has a mandate to “sweep clean’’ all affairs of the city. It never see ned to oc cur to some of the members that the subjects they brought up for discussion have been gone over and over, for years and years, by previous councils. As I recall, most of these council members campaigned on the platform of “putting econo my” into city government, "i ei they right off wanted to hire a firm of “efficiency” experts to look over city operations, not even knowing what the cost would be to hire such a firm. This finally resolved into get ting a quotation on. price before actually hiring such a firm. Then they wanted to r ■die'e the revenue from parking' mep-rs on M:i Lin Stfeet becau-t • a (■< r i p i e of m “fchant - cimipia :: i. • (i If THAI gees through. 1 car ; a ' - '-ure ( ■icmcil that ther - A he >mpi ain* - from mar ■ y m-ire w nor - than have beer 1 tea v. d f ?v>m the merchant'. i i lon’t mind go eg in• o .me .if f bo '(‘ -tores te buy 'Onieti 11 n<2 - 1 k now I can rlnve by, pull into a par king spacru run i tl* e the s? ore and get the par kage and leave I don’t mind paying five ('-•nts for the privilege O t (1 Ring SO, eV en if I’ve parked only f ve m; nut es. 1 WIFI, mind m n ever being able to find a spar c on Main f. 7k f the me- ter-hoggei' feeding • h(' be to the me'er hour aft r 1 lour. Next tins economy - minded council authorized the e i t y manager to go ahead and re ceive bids for a new fire truck, although there is no money in the budget for one now and no expected source of revenue for next year unless taxes are rais ed. This makes it seem pretty cortain that when next tax year * onun along, either the budget will have been cut drastically in other areas, or taxes will be in- . reused And you know who will got ' lie biana .1 u.-t u at eh it tic city manager!
