New York’s tallest Christmas tree, a 64-foot Canadian spruce, glows with 1200 lights against the backdrop of the RCA Building. According to legend, the Christmas tree custom began when St. Boniface, a mission ary in Germany during the 8th Century, adorned an evergreen in tribute to the Christ child and substituted the tree for some of the symbols usea in pagan rites. You can take your pick as to when the Christmas tree be came popular in the United States. Some researchers say Hessian soldiers brought the tree custom with them to this country during the time of the Revolutionary War. It has been established that Harvard University's first Ger man professor. Charles Fallen, decorated a tree for his son as early as 1832. A description of the tree was recorded in Harriet Martineau's book, "Retrospect of Western Tra v i l.” She de scribed "an evening spent dec orating the tree with gilded egg shells, wax paper bags filled with lozenges and barley sugar. * In 1847, researchers note, August Imgard of Wooster, Ohio, decorated a small spruce for his nieces and nephews. TREE TRIMMING The prettiest Christmas tree looks its best only if it is properly trimmed. The number of lights used — whether too few or too many — affects the appearance of even the most perfect tree. Here’s a formula used by professional lighting ex perts: Height of tree (in feet) x width of tree at base (in feet) x 3. It’s not as compli cated as it sounds. For example, if your tree is 6 feet high and 4% feet wide at the base; 3 x 4Vi x 3 equals 81 lights for a good ligndng effect.
