Tribute paid retiring college football coach (Tho following trihuto by Jim Andorson, Sports Editor nf The Creenville News, was published in the Wednesday, December 13 issue of that newspaper:) Harvey Kirkland has stood on many football fields in all kinds of weather and seen his team win exciting ball games and lose heartbreaking ones. He has seen an average foot ball player develop into an out standing one. He’s had the flush of success a coach feels in see ing young men under his direc tion become as one unit, and overcome odds. He’s known disappointments. Not only those where defeat comes in the final seconds. But in recruiting of high school boys, who seemed certain of entering Newberry ('ollege only to change minds at the last min ute when approached by a larg er school. lies’ rufi the gamut in lb years of being head football coach at the Lutheran college in Newberry. And now Harvey has chosen to put all the mo ments of those lb years on his personal shelf of memories and hang up his whistle. In stepping out as head coach and continuing only in the du ties as athletic director, Harvey leave-s only one coach on the South Carolina scene who serv ed as long ago as the mid-50’s. He was second only to Frank Howard in tenure. He’s Done A Great Job There’s something sad about nearly all the veteran coaches being gone. Nothing replaces experience. Or the character a coach con- tributes to his institution in the very fact of long service. He remains “coach” to many men as they continue their develop ment, out of college in the busi ness world. Some of them be come coaches themselves, and send their players to the “oh coach.” Harvey has done a truly great job at Newberry. His has been the necessity to field football teams and operate a well-round ed athletic program with limit ed funds, limited equipment, and the resultant limited personnel. But Newberry’s facilities are now second to none in the Caro- linas Conference. Though the Fighting Indian teams have been in the lower echelon of the conference, they have remained respectable. Hot Finish In The Cold The picture we will long have of Harvey, and rather typical of him, is one of 13 years ago in old Riddick Stadium at Ra leigh on a cold December day. It was near-freezing and Har vey, nattily attired as always for a football game involving him team, was shivering under an overcoat on the sidelines as his Indians took pre-game warmups for an Elks Bowl game against Appalachian. "This cold weather is not for me,” quivered Harvey. “I’m a hot weather man.” He holds many fond memories of the time spent in Summer ville .where he was such a sue- Badge Of Distinction When it comes to serving your interests 1 “YOUR PRIVATE BANKERS'' 1418 Main Street Ptmne 276-1422 OUSTANDING YOUTH AWARDS — The the months of October and November are Exchange Club of Newberry institutes its given plaques by Exchangite Donnie Lay- newest program “Outstanding Young Girl ton. That particular game that cold day was one of the best we’ve seen in the last 15 years.. Danny Brabham at quarterback had speedsters Paul Davis and Grady Ray outrunning the fa vored mountain men, for a 20- 13 Newberry victory. Grover Davis, for some years coach at McCormick, was a Tribe tackle who did the place-kicking What a wild finish! After Appalachian stopped Newberry at their three in the final min utes, they roared back to al most make it a tie. Pass inter ference at the Tribe six as the game ended gave Appalachian one more play. And when their back was caught on a sweep, and stopped, he laterelled to a teammate who crossed the goal. But the official ruled the play had been stopped and Newberry had the win. Harvey has experienced many such nerve-trying moments. But win or lose, he has always been a g-entleman ... a sportsman who “played the game” as it should be. He’ll be missed from the coaching scene.
