The Newberry Sun, Newberry, S. C„ Thursday, August 31, 1967—PAGE 7 The County Agents column Soybean Weed Control Cockleburs and morning glories in soybeans can still be controlled, or at least thinn ed out considerably. The ma terial to use is 2,4-D-B, but not the regular 2,4-D we are accustomed to using for weed control in other crops. 2,4-D-B is sold under two different trade names—Buty- rac and Butoxone. One gallon covers ten acres. Do not use at stronger rates than this as severe injury may result. The ideal time for applying either of these materials to soybeans is from beginning of bloom to mid-bloom. If you've ever combined a field of soy beans choked with weeds, you will certainly want to spray your weed infested fields right away. Don’t wait until it is too late. Watch For Soybean Insects The watch is on for soybean insects. So far it’s been a pretty bad year for worms on other crops and it’s worms we dread most on soybeans. Leaf eating insects don’t cause much damage to our local soybean crop. But when the corn ear- worm starts hitting those 4-H Auto Clubs help put the Lid on Accidents! Half the population, 102 million persons, drive cars, trucks, motorcycles, buses, taxis. Deaths and injuries involving 24.3 million drivers cost $10 billion, according to the National Safety CounciL Four of every 10 drivers under 20 years of age were involved in accidents last year, nearly twice as many as all other age groups. These overwhelming figures have spurred the Cooperative Ex tension Service to activate the national 4-H Automotive program for boys and girls 14 to^9 years old. An estimated 65,000 young sters are enrolled this year. The 4-H program is not a driver training program. It is de signed to supplement school driver training courses by teaching driver responsibility, traffic laws, safety and desirable driver attitudes. Simple mechanics and car care also are covered. The 4-H program has been recognized for preparing pre-drivers for learners’ permits and for its community action projects. The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company sponsors the automo tive program and provides annual incentive awards including six $750 scholarships. Carl R. Miller, director of youth activity pro grams for Firestone, suggests that parents can help put more safe drivers on the road by urging their teenage youngsters to join a 4-H Automotive club. A call to the County Extension office will supply the necessary 4-H enrollment information. When checking for com earworm damage, be sure .to inspect the pods. If you find holes eaten in the pods, that’s indication of com earworm damage. One damaged pod per foot of row is the danger point. DDT, Serin, or TDE are still good for control of corn ear- worm as well as most other soybean insects. But don’t get trigger happy with insecticides. Check your soybean fields and poison only when needed. Us ually one or two applications are all that is needed to bring soybean insects under control here in our area. Armyworm Slows Down The outbreak of fall army- worm a couple of weeks ago, has about gone, at least for the present. But our Clemson Entomologists tell us that an early outbreak such as we had in August is usually followed by another outbreak in Sep tember. So better keep check on well-fertilized grass, pas ture and hay crops. These will usually be the first crops hit by a newly-hatched generation of army worms. Continue Cotton Insect Control Cotton farmers, keep up the fight! Good quality cotton of desired staple length is in short supply. Olur good grow ing conditions should insure good quality in this year’s crop. Only insects or boll rots can now seriously affect the crop quality. Either continue on a 5-day poisoning schedule or keep close check on insects and hit them hard when they start building up. Planting Time For Fall Grazing Fall grazing has for years been an important crop for Newberry dairy and livestock farmers. Now the trend is somewhat toward more silage feeding and less total grazing. Top dairy farmers still tell us that well-managed winter graz ing will still boost milk pro duction even when cows are well fed from other sources Adequate lime, plenty of fer tilizer and good seedbed prep aration are important keys to getting good grazing stands. Lime should be plowed down and fertilizer applied during final seedbed preparation. For quick growth use extra nit rogen at planting time. Use of a 1-1-1 ration of fertilizer such as 10-10-10 or 8-8-8 has proven a good practice. Liquid nitro gen users could use an 0-14-14 fertilizer and broadcast the liquid nitrogen prior to plant ing. After seedbed preparation, wait until a good rain before planting. Planting on a firm seedbed will insure quicker, more uniform stands. Social Security Information Each week the social secur ity receives questions from housewives about reporting the wages of a maid. Miss Martha Pressly of the Greenwood so cial security office explained that if wages paid in a calen dar quarter by one employer are at least $50, they must be reported. For example, July through September is the third quarter of the year. If a maid is paid $50 or more during this quarter, the wages must be reported by October 31st. The maid cannot decide whether taxes will be withheld or not, Miss Pressly said. The employer is required to with hold 4.4 per cent of the maid’s w T ages and to match this with an equal amount. Failure to report the wages paid to a maid would make the employer liable for the entire amount of social security tax plus the penalty and interest. For more information about how to report household employees, get in touch with your social security office located at 219 Magnolia street, Greenwood. ATTEND FUNERAL Mrs. Roland C. Williams, Mrs. Olin P. Davenport, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Reeves and Mrs. David Slice of Greenville attended the funeral of Odell (Speck) Moore Tuesday after noon in Greenwood.
